But hey, that's a college student talking.
That's the difference between those who are technologically savvy, and those who are not. My dad, who grew up in a completely different generation than me, can't fanthom buying a computer, and it being obsolete in 2 years. To him, technology he buys should last 5+ years. He has used the same phone at home for the last 10. Me, i paid almost $500 for a cellphone last year, and will probably upgrade it this year. I buy a laptop for $4000, 3 years later, i can only sell it for $300.

The reason why i can accept this but my dad can't? Because i know technology is evolving, that each new thing i buy, has features and capabilities that the old didn't. To my dad, he can't see this, the TVs that comes out today are the same TV that he bought 5 years ago, except they're usually bigger. He doesn't understand things like 720p or 1080i, and how they can be better. Or if he does, he thinks it's a gimmick.

I know the iXPS2 i just placed on order will be better at playing games than my Acer Ferrari... but if i was to show my dad the 2 side by side playing the same games, he probably wouldn't be able to see the difference... or certainly nothing to justify buying a new laptop.

Here's an MSNBC article on why Japan and Korea has cell phone technologies that are only fantasies to us: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7032033/

It's because they can spend $500 on a cellphone, and in a year, spend another $500 on a cellphone with a few nifty features. To them, buying a cellphone that can play live statellite television is a good enough technological advance that they'll be willing to buy a new cellphone for... to most of us, it's not, because to us it's only a 'gimmick'... just as my dad thinks HDTV is a gimmick (but i love).

I paid 1440 for mines using the 50% coupon Dell had a while ago. A 9100 with loaded everything. I had it since October and now I sold it for 1800. I made a profit hehe.

Similar here - it's basically a desktop I can move to my friend's place for the weekend in no time flat.

Fair enough, but don't overstate the case. It's one thing to not know the difference, quite another to not think that the difference is worth forking out $$$$ every year for an incremental improvement when your current equipment is still doing the job just fine.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that anyone who bought an XPS Gen1 or 9100 wasn't techno-illiterate

I think the only thing is, people like the PCI-E. Just like agp that lasted for like 8 years. Some think so will PCI-E. So possibly they want a system that they can be sure to upgrade down the road... like a new video card, since the XPS is only allowed 1 upgrade. But if they get that pci-e-agp bridge.... wow.... XPS owners will be ahead of the game. Upgrade down the road with new stuff, rather than buy an entire new in the future

... except you also have to hope the card will fit inside your laptop, around the cooling fans, cpu, and other components. Laptops aren't all laid out the same way internally the way desktops are. Having the connector is only part of the requirement, unfortunately.

the only laptops which you can have a reasonably safe feeling you'll have an extended upgrade path are ones that start using the MXM or Axiom formats. As long as everything is proprietary, you'll only get 1 or 2 upgrade paths before the company forces you into a new laptop.

In 5 years I could see all major laptops using MXM or Axiom, but until a major one does, the rest won't follow. Giving such an easy way to up the performance of say, the 8600, would hurt the sales of something like the XPS. So for now, there isn't a really good business reason to adopt these formats. But there will come a time when it's just too cost effective to ignore it, and they will start using some form of unified format.

Till then, even an xps gen 2 is only likely to have 1, maybe 2 gpu upgrades. heck, besides the fitting it into the space issue, who's to say the card in 2 generations will run on the mobo in the gen2? there's always those questions out there. get what you can now, everything else is gravy

I know I'm getting screwed on the XPS2. I wish I could have had any type of notebook when I was in college. If you've got an XPS you're way ahead of the game in my opinion.

well so much luv for the xps/9100

that is nice tho I like it

The only way you will get a decent price for the 9100 is if you got the MR9800 and at least a 1 gig of RAM. DVD burner and WUXGA helps somewhat.

Can't wait to use the money from the sale of my 9100 for the XPS Gen2, just gotta wait till a good coupon code comes out for it.

inxs, did you say you got $1800 for your 9100? You got a *great* price. Dell was selling brand new XPS's with 1GB and MR9800 for $1650 this weekend. Now all they have left is the 3.4EE for another $900 or so.
