The 6800go in 9300 is ultra!

Found this post on the official dell forum:

------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear folks,

Just placed my order for the Inspiron 9300. It seems that the days of my good "old" but still present Inspiron 8600 will be over within short time. Resistance was futile facing the combination of a Pentium M 2.13 GHz, Geforce Go 6800 and 17" WUXGA

Dell's order confirmation and a phone call estimated a delivery within the next two weeks to finally arrive here in Germany. Of course I am curious and very much looking for that special moment when opening the box and get a very first impression. In addition to that Dell told me that the TrueLife 17" display is going to be a brand-new model replacing all those problem facing previous screens and the GeForce Go 6800 actually is the ultra version, too.

As I am a very satisfied Dell notebook customer, also the service was always outstanding good, with experience on an Inspiron 4100, Inspiron 8100 and my present Inspiron 8600 there was no real alternative or need to change the brand.

Why this message, you might ask? All right, I just wanted to share the news and my happiness with you. What, you mean, happiness about a machine? Perhaps it is bit like Nvidia is stating at their website nzone: "... to drench your senses".

You all have a good time...

-------------------------------------------------------------

If this really is true, no one is happier then me!
This info combined with what the Swedish dell dude told me, that the 6800 has ddr3 mems makes me hopefull.....

I hope this is true, because it will allow me to order a local 9300 rather thanmess around with an improted XPS2. I emailed my Dell Salesperson yesterday to see if she could supply any specific tech specs on the 9300 card and differences between it and the XPS2. I will let you know what she says...

Cheers

The 6800 Go in the Inspiron 9300 is a slower clocked version of the 6800 Ultra. The only difference is the clock speed, which results in the lower pixel fillrate - 5.4billion pixels/sec on the Ultra vs. 3.6 billion pixels/sec on the regular 6800. I believe the memory clocks are the same. I gathered this after spending a couple of hours trying to get a good price from Dell UK. Their Indian sales people contacted their technical guys and confirmed this. The salesperson's supervisor confirmed that the only difference was the clock speed of the 6800.

After haggling with the supervisor to get some extra off the laptop, I managed to get him to discount £200 off the price of the laptop, in addition to the £150 offer on the website. The spec. I ordered is as follows:

Pentium M 2.13GHz
512MB DDR2 RAM
17" WUXGA 1920x1200 Screen with TrueLife
80GB 5,400RPM HDD
8x DVD+/-RW
Primary 80WHr 9 Cell Battery
Secondary 80WHr 9 Cell Battery
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Go
Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth 2.0
Intel ProWireless 2200 802.11 b/g
Windows XP Home SP2
3 Year Next Business Day Warranty
3 Year Complete Care Accidental Damage Warranty

This all came to £1839 inc. VAT & delivery.

is there a difference in the cooling system between xps gen 2 and i9300?

if not it would be easy to boost the i9300 gf 6800go to an gf6800 ultra
post #5 of 37
No way to know for sure, but I bet there is. Why would Dell spend the extra money on the 9300 to give it the cooling capacity of the XPS2? (The XPS2 already has a different chasis, due to the neon and different lids, so it's doubtful that they would re-using the cooling options on both lines, but it's theorectically possible)

Although for the adventerous you could probably crack it open, apply a little Actice Silver and give it a go.

I doubt that the cooling could be much inferior on the 9300, although you never know with Dell. But like kb said, a little Arctic Silver and a good external notebook cooler (i.e. Vantec lapcool, Nexus heatpipe) can solve all your problems.

at tomshardware.com are pics of the xps gen 2 interior.

just a view into the 9300 needed now to compare both... but i found nothing

one thing is strange... refering on nvidias website the gf6800go and 6800go ultra have the same clock times... (700/1100)

This is the 9300:

This is the 9300 on steroids (aka XPS2):

The cooling solution obviously is beefier in the XPS2, and everything I've read indicates that the two have different graphics cards that are not interchangable.

Edit: it looks like tomshardware doesn't like direct image links, so here's the article:

what does beefier mean? (english is not my first lang.)
Beefier = more muscular = more robust. See the additional heat pipe on the ultra version?

yes. i9300 has only one heatpipe.

damn.
don't know what to do now...
buy an i9300 or wait for the xps here in germany? =/
the option to overclock the i9300 is too risky in my eyes, because of the 1 missing heat pipe

Some accountings show it's actually a different card. The Ultra has a bigger pickle path or something.

... **** you guys, the thread starter had my hopes all over.

Is it possible that this is the heat spreader for the x300 card...
*clings to last vestige of hope*

where do you order the 9300? I don't see it on Home. Is it in the SB section?

You're taking the word from an anonymous post here who claimed to have copied a post on another forum by another anonymous person.

Today i called dell again.
Only to ask him on the memory on the 6800 go for i9300.
Without telling him any options, he looked it up and said:
"DDR3, 500Mhz core speed".

I hope this will clear the confusion....

Yes, you see video performance is like packing pickle parts. The proper path picked procedes in packing potentially prioritized pickles predominantly partially protruded.
