Does XPS2 include a TV Tuner... or is it added with Windows XP Media Center Edition?

then whats the point of getting Windows MCE 2005? An option for those who decide to buy an external TV Tuner later? I've yet to see a very good external tuner anyways though...

I did reveive an email fom Dell Sales, saying that the TV tuner and remote come with XP MCE 2005, but to be honest, until I hear of more confirmations from Dell, I'm sceptical about it.

Has anyone seen it included in a spec sheet?

I don't think a PC vendor can offer Windows Xp MCE without a TV tuner according to their agreement with Microsoft. There are certain criteria that a MCE edition PC has to meet.

Dell has been offering MCE2005 without a tuner for a *long* time on their desktops. There is no tuner included with the XPS2. It would show up in the itemized list when you order if there were, and it doesn't.

I think the confusion about the tuner is due to the *desktop* XPS, for which you can buy an *optional* tuner when you configure with MCE2005.

From a phone conversation last night with customer care, I was told the XPS2 does NOT come with a TV tuner. The TV tuner is optional. Its available in the accessory area.

When I ordered with MCE 2005 I asked about the TV Tuner and they said, "NO it does not come with a TV tuner."

now this "optional" tv tuner that can be bought through the accessories... is it external? (i assume so) and where can i get it's specs. Failing that, anyone have a good external TV Tuner that would work a la USB 2.0 and allow my lappy to function like a TiVo?

Taken from the 'help me choose' on the XPS2 customize:

"Media Center Edition with Purchase of Optional TV Tuner (Available on Dell Dimension 8400 and XPS)

Want to transfer your recorded TV programs to DVD to watch on a stand-alone DVD player, your notebook, or another computer2

MCE2005 has specific compatibility requirements. If the device doesn't say MCE compatible, it probably isn't. There are MCE2005-compatible USB TV tuners on the market, but I don't have any experience with them.

BTW, I just read through the 9300 manual. No mention of a TV tuner option for the 9300. And the new MediaDirect feature sounds pretty weak. Rather than providing a fast-booting DVD player, it seems like they just wired up the media buttons to boot up windows and launch Windows MediaPlayer. Slow.

Oh, I see, I knew that it couldn't be that easy, and couldn't figure out why anyone hadn't seen those tuners. I was not aware that MCE2005 requires specific types of cards.

On ebay you can purchase PCMCIA tv tuners, I guess that they would be better than the usb ones, so this may be a solution.

Dell's own press release states that the i9300 will be available with an optional TV tuner.

My educated guess would be the XPS2 TV tuner will be the same one and we will see it available in the accessories area when the i9300 becomes available in the US.

I Ordered my XPS2 today and asked about a TV tuner, the rep said that they will have a TV tuner/ MCE remote all in one available next week.
