Graphics card question

Thread Starter
Forgive me my ingnorance but I've previously only ever used desktops.

I'm considering a computer with an:

ATI MOBILITY RADEON™ X600 with 128 MB VRAM

This is a pretty average card. Can it play games such as doom3 etc or no chance?

Also, can it be upgraded by myself or can you not do that with a laptop?

Sorry if my questions are boring and basic but i could do with some advice guys.

That card will definately play DOOM 3 Half-Life 2 and all the recent games. Not w/ ultra settings, but it will definately play them quite well. Probably medium-high settings when combined with a pentium m

Thanks for the info bro...do you think upgrading will be a problem?

You should be getting 20fps+ on doom3 with x600 but thats my guess. Its relatively a new card so maybe better drivers in future might push fps up. I don't know about upgrading which laptop are you looking at?

way more FPS than that, I can get 30+ with my geforce 5200

dont know bout doom 3, but hl2 u could play it at 1280x800 with settings on medium-high, no aa/af.
I am getting 19FPS with intel integrated :P
post #9 of 122
yeah way more than 20 fps. My desktop with an athlon 1800 and geforce4 does way better than that, albeit at 800 by 600 res. A new gpu like the x600, as has been said, will perform quite well for any current game you throw at it. Nice looking lappy as well. Good Luck with the search/purchase

If you get the Dell 9300 with the 6800 Ultra Go, or the XPS2 as it's called in the US, it'll completely blow the Vaio out of the water.

just check it out, and read the review here:

this is true, i mean if you're looking to get a big 17 inch notebook anyways, and you're a gamer may was well get the latest tech without paying big time sony prices

Doom3Groupie,
For stats on whether you can nicely (>30 fps) play doom3, check out video card benchmarks at tomshardware.com and anandtech.com, and also the specs listed at gamespot.com.

In a nutshell, for ATI MR x600, you can play at 1024x768 at med graphic level at decent framerate. For higher rates (50+) for smoother play you will have to spend on a higher end graphic card - atleast nVidia 6600.

the x600 is basically just a pci-e version of the 9700...it should play any current game fine, not at the highest settings, but pretty good...

That card would definately play on ultra settings. I can play Doom3 on high settings very smoothly. I notice no lag whatsoever. I have an ATI Radeon 9550 w/ 64MB.

You might play on high in 640x480 or lower resolution.

Wrong, because I have a nVidia 5200 and I can play Doom III smoothly on 800x600 on high. Did I mention this was on a 5200? The 9550 beats the $&*% out of my 5200.

Edit: It isn't even a 5200 Ultra, just a regular 5200

You're full of shit too.

There's no way your FX5200 (comparable to a GeForce 3 Ti200) can play Doom 3 on high detail settings in 800x600. If you do, it's probably at 5-7 frames per second (not playable for those of us who actually play games). High detail settings was intended for 256MB video cards (mid to high end cards).

Wow you sure proved me wrong.

Download FRAPS (http://www.fraps.com/) and post a timedemo here as proof please, with a frames-per-second meter in the upper left. Until then you're a typical online bullshitter.

NOTE: I believe (and many others will agree) playable framerates are ~30fps.
