9550 is an underclocked 9600/9700. It overclocks quite easily. I was artifact free to 408 on core actually and I just run it at 400 to be on the safe side.

Like I said though, I can still play on high quality and get a decent frame rate without overclocking.

The M9550 is clocked the same as the M9600 in the Gateway/Emachines line and isn't the same as the desktop 9500. It's probably gets almost the same or maybe slightly fewer FPS in Doom 3 than a M9700 128mb.

Yeah that's one thing you have to remember. Desktop 9500/9600/9700 does not equal Mobility 9550/9600/9700

I seem to recall the drivers of FX5xxx series of Nvidia GPUs had image quality issues where they would downgrade image quality to boost framerates even though specific image quality parameters were set to on in the control panels...I think it was on the earliest driver releases...maybe that's giving his machine the abnormally high framerates? Can anybody confirm that, or was I just drunk when I remembered that?

Hi guys

I've tried playing Doom 3 on my machine and here's what I've experienced.

Acer Travelmate 4003LCi
1.7GHz, 400 MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache
15.0" XGA TFT LCD
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700/64MB
60 GB HDD (4200rpm)
1GB DDR RAM
No overclocking done because I don't know how. lol. Not a serious gamer btw.

My settings were High Quality, 1024x768.

First of all, I tried to use FRAPS to capture a vid but I encountered the same problem as RyanFL. It just slowed down a hell lot for some reason. All the way down to 2 FPS.

Now, I managed to get an average of 30-40 FPS killing simple zombies. It went up to as high as 63 FPS.

However, when it's a roomful of imps or some graphic intensive area, it went down to (average) 25 FPS. And as low as 15 FPS.

Here's my take, I wouldn't play Doom 3 on High (especially when surrounded by monsters). Medium would be much smoother with only a slight decrease in the graphics quality. I can live with that.

Funny thing about this thread is why no one else has tried to play Doom 3. It'll be much more objective if more people posted their own results and experience with different graphic cards.

Also eagerly looking forward to Ryan's video.

Cheers!

I would post some results but I 'lost' my copy that i 'bought' from the 'store.'

Ryan i got your back on this i have seen some old ass computers running games that looked good and ran fast, where people were telling me that it would never work. Hope to see the video soon.

Side note I was trying out FRAP in BF1942 and when i tried to record videos it was fine runnig around but when i jumped into the helos or jets it would just tank.

9600/9700? What exactly do you mean by this? 9600 is actually closer to the 9500 (in some cases the 9500 outperforms it) rather than the 9700, which is a lot closer to the 9800 (in terms of performance as well).

I'm talking about desktop cards, not Mobility's. If anyone has some more light to shed please do so.

And yes O/Cing can make a difference in gaming. Especially if you really OC by that much...
It's still a 9550

Ryan, when you get the video working try to do 2, 1 OCed 1 not OCed

I tried to OC my 5200 when I first got Doom III, I didn't do any better

While playing NFSU and hitting F10, FRAPS snaps a shot, but doesn't show the frame rate?
Am I doing something wrong?

Right, the mobile cards are different apparently.

BTW, I still don't have a fricken clue how to copy video from this camcorder and that other board doesn't seem to be much help. I was had a class at work all day today so I couldn't call Panasonic. I will be tomorrow though.

Video's still coming. Apparently I need a firewire to transfer movies. I'm going to go buy one tomorrow.

I know it's been awhile, but I finally got my video camera working. Apparently I had to buy a firewire to transfer digital video. It will not allow me to transfer over USB 2.0.

Long story short. I will have a video very soon.

Just finished reading this whole thread...........................

#1. What utter nonsense. All this hoopla over such a silly argument? Get a life people!!!

#2. With #1 out of the way,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the suspense is killing me!!!
I can't wait to see the video and see Ryan own Tachikomo and put him in his place!!

But still, seriously, get a life people.

*Whispers under breathe*
Go Ryan.

Wohoo we're all waiting for you Ryan!

Oh he's here alright.

He's laying low until Ryan posts definitive proof at which point he'll lay low for another month until the thread gets buried in the mists of time

OR

Ryan fails to post any proof at which point Tachikmo will pop in every so often to make sny, sarcastic remark's peppered with these ' ' bad boys.

I have a 30MB video. Need someone to host. Lowest fps I hit was 27.

Can anyone host this video for me? Just for like a week or something. Or at least until Tachikoma sees it.
