I don't know. Am I one of hte few that actually likes the way this looks? The less is more elegance of hte Powerbook and W1 has it's merits but that look has become cliche.

Hot diggity... that is one hawt notebook. I agree with kevhuynh, the more I look at it the more hot it looks

I believe the chassis is plastic... but not cheap Dell plastic. It is supposedly quite high quality, but not 'metal'.

I couldn't agree more on the asthetics. I was reading the manual and noticed this lapto does not have a dedicated space on the touchpad for scrolling. How does the software utility work for the scrolling capabilities for the touch pad?

The fact that it isn't metal actually lowers the price quite a bit. See the forum at Notebook Review for more info. Oh, and anyone who wants to look at all the pics I found should go here or here. God speed... and may He speed these notebooks to us, too!

I have also read that the z71v is a mid-level entry from Asus...that the M6 is a higher end model. How could this be, other than the case construction?

It isn't (at least not in my view). The Z71 performs better than the M6 series, and will even perform better than the Z70 series which is officially replacing the M6 series. I believe the best video card in the Z70 series is the 64MB VRAM card.

Like B Nietsnie said, it's not. Asus may be marketing it that way, and counting on people willing to pay more for supposedly "higher end" models, but we discerning buyers are not fooled. The Z71V has the better specs. It's better. It's cheaper. It's mine... ...or soon will be!

I think the slim just mean that it is the small form factor used on notebooks. So yes, I think it would fit. Just curious... why that drive? It is the same speed as the one Asus is offering. Is it just cheaper?

Yeah, when I ordered it I made sure I didn't actually get the "A" model by mistake instead of the "V". I rechecked my receipt to make sure. It's sad what we'll get all worked up over, ain't it?
No, isn't that much worse, but yeah, it is 8x instead of 4x which well, *shrugs* is something. I'm not necessarily going to do it but something I was considering. Also I was reading the manual and noticed it says it doesn't have gigabit ethernet. Which again, people might say, well why do you care, but some places I've worked had gigabit networks and so that'd be nice. Not necessarily a deal breaker for sure. Sorta like bluetooth, although bluetooth is more just fun than gigabit.

In any case, all this is still moot until I figure out my taxes and how much if any I owe uncle sam. That'll determine if I go get myself some new technology

I wonder what the Deluxe Carrying Case is really like. Rick said it was high quality (obviously ). Do you think it is just a protective case that just covers the laptop, about 1/3" thick? Because that would be perfect... would fit very nicely into a bag with my books.
Good question! Rick, can you post a picture of the carrying case?

@Tellerve: I believe the drive you are looking at and the drive Asus offers have the same speeds:

Asus's drive:

And the NEC drive:

Am I missing something? (Almost guaranteed to by yes )

Just wondering, if the optical drive can be removed to stick a 2nd battery in there? There is no mention of such battery that will fit the optical drive compartment.

It's in the battery options: "2nd Battery Option (6.0-9.5 hour total) (+99.00)"
