btw half life 2 demo and far cry both run beautifully on 1680x1050...
Well, I did a bunch of "Timedemo" tests to test different configurations and they were all incredibly low. However, when I ran the game with those configurations they seemed very fast. So I think the Timedemo is flawed. My settings right now are 1280x1024 w/ SM 3.0, but I think I'm going to bumb it up to 1400x1050...

EDIT: How do measure the FPS in game with this game? (Not Fraps...)

Just to report in but I got XP and Ubuntu to dual boot on the laptop. All hardware seems to work fine. Surprised me since I've heard of horror stories of laptops and linux not working but everything just works.

If I bought the modular bay battery do I have to remove the cd/dvd drive to put the battery in?
Yes. Unless you want to hold the battery in your pocket and run wires from your pocket to the laptop. And you can only do this with gum and chop sticks. While juggling chainsaws. On fire. While whistling dixie.

stocked on the Z71V is 250/400. Use the NVHardCore to activate the additional control panel option in the display options screen.

Then go there to adjust the clock setting, not in the NVHardware

One thing I have noticied is that the scroll pad works in firefox but only while running linux. Kinda ****ed up though that it doesn't always work in windows. Someone also reported that their wireless NIC keeps cutting in and out, mine does it too both in windows and linux. I may have to open it up to check the cable connections.

I had a problem whith my touchpad and firefox when I used the touchpad software that was on the driver cd. I uninstalled it because the one windows installed worked better. No more problems. My scroll pad works fine in firefox now. I had issues with my wireless, but I re-installed windows because something got corrupted the first time and now everything works like a charm. I need to get partition magic or something to I can install linux...I should just have just invested in a USB floppy so I could have partitioned the drive propery to begin with. I thought I would be able to boot from my thumb drive, but that didn't work out. Oh well.

Edit: I can't believe how fast I got used to this screen! I sit at a regular computer now and everything looks so small, grainy and scrunched together. This keyboard is going to take a little more time to get used to. This is my first laptop so I'm not used to the compact size.

I just finished testing out ubuntu and the sound does not work by default. Going to have to test some other stuff out.

I believe I'd like to see that...

For those of you having intermittent wireless connectivity, do you have the Intel Prowireless software installed as well as the Intel drivers? Secondly, make sure that Windows hasnt taken control of the wireless card, this would create a conflict between softwares.
Its imperative that the Intel Pro Wireless software is installed

The intel software is installed and is the active wireless software. The thing about it is that I see no place in the intel software to enter a WEP key as a passphrase, rather you have to enter the hex key. Keep in mind the wireless cuts out both in XP and in Linux so it has to be some sort of a hardware problem.

Is there a Nushield screen protector that perfectly fits the Z71V screen? I can't seem to find it on their website. Are there any other alternatives to nushield?

BTW does yours have a SATA HDD - the AJP website isn't too clear on that. I think I would collect too - it certainly won't cost me £45 in petrol to get to Staples Corner!

All I know about mine that its a 60gb 7200rpm, very fast. Just give them a call on the website number the guys seem to know a fair bit

First of all I love the specs on this Asus model. However, I have a question about the screen. I've seen that there are a few people on here that have had concerns with this sparkly look on light colors like white and green.

If my main use for this computer will be video editing, games, dvd movies, and general internet use will this so called sparkly effect be an issue for me?

BTW this is a great thread and I have really gotten a lot of good info on this model - just a little worried about the screen

Thanks in advance
I don't notice much of a sparkle. There is a little bit there, mostly on white. But nothing out of the ordinary. My brother has a sony flat monitor for his desktop and it looks the same way. I think some people are just a little more picky than others. I also checked out a few monitors in town and they didn't look any different.
