I'm taking the plunge, finally! (Asus Z71V) - Page 5

B Nietsnie, is that then :

8x +R, 8x-r, and just 4x for +/-RW? or is it just 4x -r? How about dual layer? 2.4x DL?

Thanks. I'm still trying to decide between this and the acer 8104 myself

I have a few questions for you all, if you wouldn’t mind helping me out: What advantages are there to pre-ordering the Z71V? Does anybody here expect the price to be lower on the barebones or components if purchased in June or July instead? Also, besides DDR2, non-integrated video, and better screen resolution, are there any advantages of the “V” over the “A”? Oh, and does anybody have any thoughts on the “A”?

Thanks!
I (and others) ordered pre-order because there are only a limited supply at the moment for the Z71v. Asus is short many WSXGA+ screens, and so the next batch of Z71v will be delayed. Pre-ordering gets you one of the notebooks with WSXGA+ before they run out.

I believe the + and - speeds are the same. I am confirming the R and RW speeds at the moment. I'll get back to you.

Okay, thank you.

Could you also check the dual layer speed for me please? (and make sure it does indeed support dual layer).

It definently supports dual-layer. ISTNC does not yet have word from Asus on the detailed specs on the drive. All Asus has said is that it is "8x". ISTNC assumed that meant the read speed, but it may in fact be the write speed. Further word from Asus is coming.

On a side note: The Asus Z71V can be upgraded to Yonah when it becomes avaliable in 2006! Yea!

For those of you asking about the DVDRW for the Z71V, here are the specs:

Dual layer
CD read 24X
DVD read 8X
CDR 24X
CD-RW 10X
DVD-R 8X
DVD-RW 4X
DVD+R 8X
DVD+RW 4X

Hope this helps !

Sweet! Exactly what I wanted. Thanks

who said it would support the yohan? isn't yohan going to have 667mhz fsb, and what about the thermal implications of 2 processors? Or the fact that they are die shrunk that it'll put out the same amount of heat?

Anyways, that's an interesting tidbit of info if true.

I don't know the details, but Yonah is also going to come out as a single-core: Article And supposedly the Z71v already has great cooling capabilities, so it should be able to handle the extra-heat. I was told by IST, but all the other websites state that it will be upgradably to Yonah as well.

Anybody know why the Z71 series is not on the Asus website? When they post it I'm sure they'll post if it can support Yonah as well.

The Z71V is not posted yet because it has not officially launched. Currently the resellers are the only ones with data for the Z71V

Also, for those of you seeking info regarding the Yonah processor.

Yonah is the first dual core mobile processor. Based on mobile optimized micro-architecture and 65nm process technology.

“Yonah” is designed to provide power management capabilities and enhanced performance for multiple demanding applications and multi-threaded applications.

Great! Yet more reasons to be happy with my pre-order. B Nietsnie or Rick (istnc), do you know how a processor upgrade would work when yonah comes out?

Well, I can assure you we (the consumer) could not do it without voiding the warranty. We would probaly send it into Asus (or maybe to IST then they send it to Asus, or they do it) and they switch it out and install all the new stuff. Probaly for a hefty sum too ... and I'd guess it'd take a couple weeks. Still it's great to know that your notebook won't be dead in two years, that you can rejuvanate it!

If you look at the Acer 8104, it started almost everywhere between $2200 and $2300, US. Now there are places selling it for up to $2700. Once they find out it's popular and a good notebook, resellers will start raising prices. However, if you buy during pre-order, the resellers are still determining the popularity of the computer, so you can get better deals before it's officially released.

Well, I suppose I should expect that it would be expensive, but I agree: it's a great way to prolong the life of the computer!

Well, this is just awsome. I plan on having four OS's on the new computer. Windows XP will be on 30GB partition, Windows 2000 on a 10GB partition, Windows 95 on a 5GB partition, and an extra 5GB partition for some Linux version (still debating which one to get). The notebook comes with the OS installed from IST. So I talked to Rick (from IST) and asked if I could just get the CD not pre-installed. I also ask if they can install it on a 30GB partition. And they can! Rick without hesitating said sure! So sweet! I now have my computer coming set up exactly how I want (minus the other OSs), thanks IST!

I love this company so far

Why would you want to run Windows 95...

Compatability/Testing for some stuff I'm working on...

So if it supports yonah then wouldn't it at most need a bios upgrade? Why do you think you'd need to send it back to get overhauled? That doesn't seem so much like "support" as, "hey we can switch out the motherboard!"

It would also mean a physical replacment of a couple parts. I'm sure anybody could replace the part themselves, but they would definently void the warranty. If you don't want to void the warranty, I'm sure you'd have to send it into Asus to get the stuff replaced.
