XPS Gen 2 GPU is upgradeable

Well its not exactly USER-upgradeable. When the upgrade is available the dell technician will come and upgrade it for you.

"Inside the machine, the Inspiron XPS Gen 2 contains the first 256-MB equipped mobile graphics card, the GeForce Go 6800 Ultra that uses a proprietary Dell version of the MXM removable graphics module, according to Dan Vivoli, senior vice president of marketing for Nvidia, in an interview. Users can purchase a graphics upgrade package that will dispatch a Dell technician to their site to upgrade the graphics when a future module comes available, but will be forced to replace the module with a Dell offering, not a generic model, Vivoli said."

I guess the only catch is that the upgrade option will probably be offered once per customer. That's what i heard was the case for the first xps. Also, its shady whether an ATI option will be possible, but if its using a custom MXM connector, that could just be another way of saying that its a hybrid. Especially since Dell has already supported the ATI modules in the XPS. On top of that this guy at beyond 3D noticed that the connector on the XPS Gen 2 looks like an AXIOM connector, further suggesting that the Gen 2 uses a hybrid design. Of courese his observation is to be taken with a grain of salt at this point.

Oh man, the Gen 2 seems like an excellent deal right now, but the only thing that's keepin me away is the damn processor. I just wish that was upgradeable too. Newayz, I hope this clears up confusion for some people who may have been holding themselves back from buyig the Gen 2 just because they thought it lacked an upgradeable GPU.

Nice find! That does answer some questions.
I will try to store this one - though dont know if there a way to store favorites on the forum? Ideas anyone?

Not sure about the first 256MB equipped mobile video card though. Or do we ignore Clevos offerings on the basis that anything over 10lbs can't be considered mobile?

Cheers

Good findings.

About upgrading the video card-- on the i9100 and XPS 1, you could call Dell tech support and if you let them walk you through the process, you can do the upgrade yourself without voiding your warranty. You can probably do the same thing here.

About the modified MXM-- I don't mind that it's not generic MXM. It's essentially like not using MXM at all if it's not generic, since it won't work in any other notebook, but that's ok. Dell isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so I can count on upgrades later on. If I had decided not to go with Dell, I would most definitely go with generic MXM so I can find upgrades from other sources that may be cheaper, or in case the company I bought my laptop from went under.

One last thing-- the Inquirer has a short article about an ATI video card built to MXM specifications and it includes a picture. I would expect some ATI options later since ATI is slow when it comes to getting products shipped, but then again, NVidia is definitely kicking some butt with that 6800 Ultra Go.

In this picture it appears the XPS2 has a place to unscrew a panel right where the graphics card should be. Look in the middle of the picture right underneth the modem and network ports.
