where oh where did my wireless go?

I know zip about wireless. But unless I was really misunderstanding somehting I was told it was in my Sager.
I have an 888E.
When I got it, every time i turnred it on it had a little icon in the task bar
"Looking for wireles network" if I remember correctly.
So I figured it was just eating up resources and turned it off.
(With a context menue option if I ma remembering right)
I may also have turned it off it's service in 'maconfig'.
If I did I can't remeber it's name.
Now i am traveling and could use it.
A network guy tiried to make it work.
Now I have "1394 connection - speed 400 mbps" in my task barBUT it will not detect any signal. When I click repair it says "TCP/IP not enabled".
But it say TCP is there and will not allow the connection to be uninstalled
(I figured I might try a reinstal it).
I would appreciate any help I can get.
thanks

the 1394 connection is Firewire - has nothing to do with WiFi.
First go to Network Settings and disable the 1394 Firewire network port by right clicking on the 1394 network and select "DISABLE".

You may have switched off the wireless module.
You have three LED's at the base of your screen.
To enable the WiFi module press Fn + F7
If the module is in your laptop the rightmost LED should turn orange indicating the WiFi module is now active.

Some of it worked ...kind of

Hi,

Well I disabled the 1394 thing but could not do it thru context menu.
Clicked 'disable' repeatedly with no results.
So I unchecked each box for each component and saved it.
Then it came back as disabled.

BTW I do have the 3 LEDs and the right one is off.
(It has a ^ in a box by it).

I tried every way I could think of to click fn+f7 to no avail.
There was no response from the comp that I could detect.

Also there are 3 silver buttons (Email, WWW, and ?)
I tried pushing the right most one, also with no results.

What should I try now?

Thanks for your help

If Fn+F7 does not do anything it could be that a WiFi module is not installed or broken
You can physically check the module but it involves removing the keyboard and underlying heat spreader (metal sheet below the keyboard). The wifi module is in the extreme top left hand corner of the laptop. It should have two wires attached to it and may be covered with an orange translucent plastic sheet.

How does one remove the keyboard?

thanks

There are two clips above the F1 and / keys along the top row. Gently push them back and the keyboard lifts out.
Then...

Also if you do a search on the forum for 8890 keyboard removal I seem to remember some more pics.

Problems with Wifi module on 8890.. help

I had a hard drive crash and I reinstalled winXP.. I did not put SP! in and then put all the drivers that I had gotten from the Sager site (My laptop bag got stolen, the nice targa backpack, it had all my driver cD's in it). There is no wireless device driver on the sager website.

hitting fn-f7 was getting nothing, so, I couldn't get the sp1 off the site msupdate because I had no highspeed internet, I went and plugged in somewhere, got the sp1 installed, now

I can now hit fn-f7 and get the rightmost LED to light up orange, but, instead of the quaint single beep on, two beeps off, I get a rat-a-tat-tat or a beep-beep-be-beep when trying to turn the wifi on, and 2 beeps off, but there is nothing showing up in the tasktray (ie: like USB device found, and then the wireless networking icon there).. I'm getting nothing.

What is going on, why am I getting what sounds like an error beep when trying to activate the wifi card?

Thanks.

You need the driver CD dude.

The LED is controlled by the internal H8 microprocessor which just enables the WiFi device. Windows will not recognise the hardware till it has the driver loaded.
You can check this if you go to device manager after you have enabled the WiFi module using F7. It should show up as an unrecognised device.

Connection enabled but NO light and..

I reinstalled the drivers and it says it's enabled and seems to be O.
However there is no light in the right LED.
Also fn+f7 seems to do nothing at all.
I right clicked and disabled the wireless and tried to use the 2 'f's too
nada

any 'bright' light ideas?

hmmm....
Have you checked that the module has not come loose inside the laptop.
You need to remove the keyboard and heat spreader to gain access to the WiFi module. Check the card is still seated correctly and is still screwed down.
The fact that you don't get an orange light in the right hand LED is not good.
You said before you added the driver you had the LED come on?

At the risk of sounding like a Microsoft tech head, my suggestion might be to start from scratch again and reinstall Windows with SP1 then the drivers.

No light

The WIFI symblo in the task bar appears now.
And last night it said it had a week signal detected.
Is it still possible I have no WIFI?

Also Zonalarm asked to clear SNMP service.
Is this related?

thnx
