Compaq Presario 1200 problem(s)

Hi, I hope someone out there can help me,I have an Prresario 1200 xl-111
I bought for 130.00 and almoct everything is great and what you would expect with something used, except that the scroll keys below the touchpad
don't work. Does anybody know how I can check to see if it's asoftware or a
hardware problem? i'm also a bit new at this sort of thing as this is my first
computer.
I also have another slight problem, when I first got this computer I was able to go into standby mode but now whenever I try to it either goes into stanby for a couple of seconds and then pops back out or it will restart instead. I'm running windows xp w/sp2 and this problem showed up before I inst***ed sp2 in fact before sp2 it would just restart at least now it will attemt to go into standby (albeit a few seconds then restart)
I'm not sure as to any other info I would need to give about my setup for someone to help so I'll try to do my best with what I think would help.
I also have 64mb of onboard ram and I added 128mb to the only other slot
in the computer, but it will onlt register 188mb when i check to see how much i have (this was like this when it only had 64mb).
Thank you for *** your help and time,Richard
P.S. everything is standerd with what it origin***y came with except the 128mb of ram and the OS.

1) Reinstall touch pad drivers and software.
2) Shut off the hibernation feature
3) Your ram is shared memory with the system and video

Compaq Problems

Thank you for the help i'll try the reinstalation of the drivers and let you know how it went and thank you so much for clearing up the ram question.
I think I know the answer but i'll ask anway, is there a way scince the system and video ram are shared to increase the amount of video ram?
Not by alot maybe raising it to 8mb from 4mb I have added a 128mb of ram to the 1 available slot in the computer and would have gotten a stick of 256mb but I was told that the processor (it's an amd k6 2 w/ 3d now technology) can only handle an upgrade of 128mb. and if i were to go higher it would actu***y slow the system down. Could you tell me if this is true or not and whether i could possably dedicate more mb to the video?
Thank you again for your patiance and time, Richard

Yes, you can change the amount of memory used by the video card by changing the buffer size in your system BIOS at startup(it is limited to a certain extent depending on your video card).

I guess I could add myself to this thread since it seems pertinent. I sold my first laptop to a friend of mine about 3 years ago, it's a 1200 xl something or other (I don't think that numbers all too specific right now anyway...). The thing is pretty crazy right now.
1: the screen is terrible (lines all over it, but it's old, and there's nothing that can be done to fix it),
B: this is the more serious problem, when you power it on, all things turn on (HD spins, processor gets warm (obviously cycling), power lights turn on), but it seems to hang, I'm not sure what to do about it; and am thinking it might be a bad/old HD that has stopped working, but it never outputs "no OS", just nothing, so I'm not really sure, and this has been kinda meandering, cause it's not mine, and i'm not all too concerned about it (he got a killer price for it from me when he bought it, 200 bucks 3 years ago with a bag and NIC). Anyone who might have some suggestions, thanks. peace
