What's the mimium needed to do video?

I'm looking at upgrading laptops. I type this from a custom 15" built by a local shop with 2 gig P4, 256 ram, 40 gig hdd. I'm looking for something with a bigger screen and enough oomph to get into video editing. Not producing indy films or anything, just camcorder stuff. My laptop serves as my desktop replacement and I don't do a lot of traveling, but I do occasionally drag it down to the lab or something. I do not like how hot this one runs and how often it runs its fan, and how uselss its battery life is. I'm thinking a lot has to do with the pentium desktop processor, but it might be poorly built too.

I don't really know what all is out there, but I was looking at the Sonys with the 2.0 gig pentium M and the 80 gb hdd. It is very tempting to look at some laptops that come with up to 3 ghz pentium 4s, but I wonder about their utility as actual laptops.

If it comes in a reasonably thin and light package I'm looking to go 17" and I also want a dvd burner.

I don't really know what specs you want nowadays to do video with.

I'm looking to spend under $2500 but could spend more, don't hesitate to reccomend more expensive ones.

I use my m6805 to edit and render MPEG video. The Mobile Athlon 3000 in it can hold it's own against a P4, and 64 bit apps are just around the corner. Widescreen 15.4" has plenty of space for two monitors, a couple of menus and a timeline. I get around 2 hours on battery (rendering and editing) and it has FireWire if I need a really fast external drive or a camcorder input. Currently available as the Gateway 7422, with 80 GB HD, 1 GB ram, 8X Dvd RW (don't know if that's dual layer or not) and brightscreen. I capture using an external MPEG encoder and edit and render using the uLead software that came with the capture box. I've tried Avid Free on it and it was pretty fast. Best of all, the 7422 is around $1300 or so.

Thanks a lot. That seems like a lot of computer for the money. Most of the ones I have looked at with a gig of ram, 60+ gig hdd, and firewire portage are well over 2 grand. I really don't know much about all the processors out there except I have heard good things about the pentium M.

Definitely AMD mobile64 or (for even more battery life) Pentium-Ms.

I can't really speak to best battery life, or anything yet, as I am new the laptops. . But I can tell you that video editing CAN tax a system pretty good, and the faster it runs, the better, and the more ram, the better, and the faster and bigger the hard drive, the better. The problem is all these things go AGAINST your concerns about battery life and weight.

I just ordered the Sager 9860 to edit video with, and it's gonna be a big PIG. It'll maybe get an hour out of the battery, and weighs over 12 pounds! But once it's set on a desk (not my lap!) and plugged in, editing is gonna be a LOT smoother than it would be with a smaller/slower machine.

So it's really all about finding the perfect balance. Obviously, figure out what editing software you are gonna use, and see what it requires and go from there. And don't forget, running it with the minimum system specs won't be much fun!

Good luck!
