9860 burn victims

I was wondering if my 9860 was defective. I only have 2 days to RMA it, so I figure now is as good a time as any to ask. Has anyone else got burned by the video card in this unit. My 9860s x800 gets so hot I have a burn on my left arm. I would speculate it to be about a third degree burn. I will post up a couple pictures in a second. Has anyone else experienced this? What should I do?

Thanks
Lonzo

How? From the palm rest or did you physically pull the card out and press it against your skin?

Palm rest only. Fingers seated on the WASD keys, while playing EQ2.

That's 1st degree, by the way.

Is 1st worse than 3rd?

SUE ADAM!!!!!!!!!! DO IT!!!!! TAKE HIM FOR EVERYTHING HES WORTH!!!

nah in all serious-ness maybe u just have senstive skin? i mean, as long as ur lappy isint overheating it shouldnt be too hot? tho.. how long were u playing before u got the burn???

A 3rd degree burn is one that severs nerves and burns most of the flesh away. A 1st degree burn is closer to a heat rash or a sun burn.

This is something I've been experiencing too, though not to that degree. the problem is that the graphics exhaust is on the left towards the front of the machine and it blows scalding hot air directely out to your arm or hand if, like me, you are left
handed and use a mouse. it got so bad I actually had to make a deflector to keep the heat from cooking my hand. It's not really ideal if you move the thing every day back and forth to work. I couldn't believe it when i first encountered this as it seems like a recipe for danger, seems I was correct. the heat from the gfx card vent is actually higher than that from the CPU vent.

Pure stupid design. The palm rests are too hot to use for more than 5 minutes and the vent stops me using a mouse without protection. One of the reasons I'm reluctant to replace my Dud 9860 with another.

My mistake on the burns, sorry. I thought 1st was REALLY bad. Luke does this happen when you game on your 9860? Is mine defective? I also have 1 stuck pixel and a non-functioning bluetooth card. Is an RMA right for me?

I got this burn after about the 2nd day. The air that the 7-1 card reader blows out is INSANELY hot. I think it would burn someone with 5-10 minutes. The first time I played I had to get a towel to cover my arm. I guess I built up an imunity to it, when I checked my arm though, I had a major rash. I am more concerned about permanent scaring and things like that, than the immediate thread.

I game/work on my 9860 normally around 13 hours a day and one might describe my skin as fair(alright i'm pale... i don't see the light of day... ever) and I have yet to get any marks or signs of even redness on my skin. This is with all stock thermal designs of the 9860, if you need proof of that look at the xfire in my sig or i'll send you pics of my notebook... I have completely rubber the paint off one part of my notebook from use.

My skin is definetly not sensitive. I have NEVER even had a sunburn. I go outside, I tan right up, no burning whatsoever. I cannot game on my 9860 for 13 and not expect to have a burned arm. It was bad enough this week, that it almost started to bubble. I personally think this is unacceptable. $2700 for a arm grill, is rediculous.

Is it possible our machines have some strange fault as this can't be right. The heat coming from that vent is searing hot and very uncomfortable to use, same with the wrist pads. Way too hot to use comfortably for any length of time. I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt if this is a possibility, otherwise i may end up having to get a crappy dell just so i can use the thing without getting scorched.

I love the screen, the power and flexibility but that heat is a real pain in the as... erm, I mean arm

dude, there is no way your burns are from the 9860 after your 2nd day. My friend attends stonybrooks medical wing. He says you are full of it

my 6800gddr3 exhaust is warm to say the least. If you got burned so bad, why did it get to that stage before you pulled your hand off the laptop?

I really dont give a damn what your friend says. These pictures were taken today. I have had the unit almost 1 month. I had a rash after the 2nd day. It has progressed. End of last week it had started to bubble. End of story. Believe it or dont, really doesnt matter, it still happened.

Oh my God! I don't care if it's officially defective or not, this is not the machine for you. Whatever the reason, that machine needs to go back. You can find out if it is a defect in your paticular machine or not later. I think you should return yours right away. The only reason to keep it would be because the PCTorque folks (or whomever you purchased it from) would like to diagnose the problem with you to see if you should even think about trying another machine.

Wow, I think that's pretty frightening.

whatever.

Im sure if other people had this problem it would have come out already.
If you are the lone victim, I still cant imagine why you would use a laptop that would constatntly burn your arm after the 2nd day.
ggod luck with the radiator you purchased.

I would agree regaurdless you should send the notebook in to get it diagnosed, no matter what burning your self should not be acceptable.

God - I hate blathering.

Some one get a thermometer and measure the temperature of the damned exhaust. Until you have DATA you are just talking out your asses.

Send it back dude. Whether it's defective or not, it's clearly not a good choice for you if it's doing that. Sorry to hear it's gone so badly and good luck with future laptops.
