I got myself a 3.2 northwood to replace my 2.8 prescott. With the 2.8 prescott my temps were around 55-58 idle and with the 3.2 Northwood 38-40.
My batterie life whent up as well, from 1:40 to 2:30.

i was thinking of doing the same.. although i dont like going down from the 3.4 to a 3.2 (or spending the grand for the 3.4EE). two questions:
1) can you post a 3dmark03 score for your configuration, at normal clock speeds for the mr9800? just want to compare with mine before i think of making a switch
2) you know if there are any northwood 3.4ghz cpu's?

-thanks a bunch

You bet there is 3.4 Northwood's.
I just done the swap myself over the weekend.
I took my 3.4 out of my desktop and put it in the XPS and put the Prescott in my Desktop.
My results mirrored clowns with getting almost double the battery life out of a Northy compared to a Prescott .

Both Cpu's were rated at 3.4/800 FSB
I have a 3.2 I could try if i get to feeling bored next weekend lol.

iam just wondering of the loss in preformance, cause i think i heard about some loss with northwoods. and i dont really feel like spending the extra hundreds for $$ for a preformance loss and a drop in temps. instead i was thinking, if the CPU is too much $, i could do the 8600 cooling mod. but so far i dont know anyone that has done this with there xps.

The loss is with the prescott.
The northwood always out performs the Prescott clock for clock in real world apps and games.
The prescott has to scale a lot higher to compete with the Northwood.

thanks for the mark score clown, now i know i either want to get a northwood @ 3.4 or do that heat mod.. ive been getting around 6555 in 3dmark03, and i dont really want to go down anyfurther, but thanks anyway. anyone have a 3dmark03 score w/ a 3.4 northwood? then i can compare apples for apples.

and again, if anyone has done that heat mod i would really like to know how hard it was and how it worked out. thanks

You comfortable taking apart your laptop?

how do you know what type of cpu u've got?

I bought my i9100 on ebay and it has a 3.2 cpu, so I guess it's probably northwood, but is there a way to check it without opening the laptop?
Download CPUID here and check how much L2 cache you have. If L2 = 1024 its a prescott if its 512 its a northwood.

And I forgot to add if its HOT as HELL its most likely a prescott

I talked to Dell yesterday and they told me that taking the laptop apart and upgrading the CPU does not void the warranty. Interesting...another step closer in getting an EE

I wondered that my self when they give the instructions on how to do it the factory manual .
So how could they deny it later.
