Man, why does nobody make the laptop I want?

Every time I think I have nailed down exactly what I want, there is something missing.

I thought I wanted a prostar/sager3790 but it doesnt' have a firewire port? I gotta have my firewire port! Why is it so hard?

All I want is a 15.4" screened, under 7 lb, 1.7+Pentium M, a gig of ram, 60+gig hdd (preferably 7200rpm), a dvd burner, a couple usbs and a firewire port, video out, and good flash memory support, and under $2500. I do a bit of low intensity video editing you see.

For a while I looked at sonys but they only take memory sticks, or they didn't have firewire ports, or they didn't have bluetooth availability..

I looked at a gateway 7422 but it is a tad piggish and has a 4200rpm hdd, and no pentium M.

Does what I want exist?

Oh my good man. Please welcome youself to the world of the Asus Z71V and the Acer 8104. I know the Asus has a firewire port, not sure about the Acer. Those computers are exactly what you want if I'm not mistaken.

The acer 8100 series has a firewire port, but I believe its a 400Mb/s port, not the 800Mb/s version. Its a nice feature. I regularly use it to move large amounts of data between my desktop and laptop since I don't have a gigabit ethernet switch yet.

ALL the laptops i have seen have at least 1 FW port, mine does, never used it but i know its working (windows says its working lol) the asus has 4x usb, the newer asus listed above has 5x usb, which is very adiquite for a laptop (alot of laptops have 6x usb now)

thelaptop i have sounds like what you want

any pentium M can go in the Asus w/ 400 FSB
up to 2GB of ram
any HDD 2.5"
intel ABG wireless cards work! some other guy had one on the forum
15.4" WXGA/WSXGA (if you can find it)
radeon 9700 pro 64MB
choice between a COUPLE DVDRW drives, i personally would go with the panasonic drive
MMC/SD/MS/MS PRO Reader 4in1, works excelent i use it almost every day, CF via PCMCIA slot, no built in bluetooth though
GIGABIT LAN!!!!!!!

once you go gigabit lan in your house you will never go back to anything. TRUST ME

Luckily for you, your requirements are easily met. The Sager 3790 does have a Firewire port so you can put it back on your list. In fact, pretty much every manufacturer has a matching notebook except Sony and their ridiculous insistence on only having memory stick slots, and some IBMs which don't have firewire (although this may have changed). That's also easily solved with a PC card.

The obvious favorite would be an Asus M6, which can be had for well under $2500 - $1600 or so - and is well liked here.

The real differentiator between notebooks is screen resolution and quality. There are heaps of WXGA screens, many of which have the nice glossy enhanced surfaces. There are some WSXGA screens, which have nice resolution. For some bizarre reason there are no WSXGA enhanced screens.

I'd toddle down to Best Buy or CompUSA, check out the screens, and if WXGA is fine grab an Asus.

Cheers

Steve

I think the acer 8140 is exactly what I want, thanks a lot, I hadn't even heard of acer before, I hope they are a good company. It's a bit more expensive than I wanted, my buget has dropped to around $2000, but hey, I know I will never regret it.
