Gateway 7422gx modem question

Hi, just purchased this notebook and do love it so far... except the specs said 56 K ITU V.92 ready Fax/modem and it seems what I have is a Conexant Soft K 56 Data Fax Modem. Is this the same thing? I have call waiting and there are no options to control incoming calls. Makes me think I have the wrong modem. Or is there a driver update I need to install? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Mine is the same thing. I don;t use it though so I cannot offer any solutions for you.

No idea, never used it. It just made me feel better that my buck went a little further

if you are looking for a way to disable call waiting, go to control panel/phone and modem options/dialing rules tab. in the locations box, select the location and select edit. there should be a box you can check 'to disable call waiting dial:' and an option box where you can input *70 (or whatever number used to disable).

Thanks, but I don't want to disable call waiting or anything. My desktop has the V.92, which is nice because it does let you know when there's a call. And we need that because of my husband's work. I'm just disappointed that this laptop does not have the V.92 as listed in the specs. Everyone tells me that you can't change a modem in a laptop, so guess I'm stuck. Love the notebook otherwise though!

i think all newer notebook modems are standard v.92 now. check in the control panel. mine lists a 'v.92 features settings' option.

Just rechecked my modem properties in the control panel. It's just not a V.92 Guess they put in what they had lying around instead of what the spec sheet listed (Gateway site & Best Buy website.) Thanks for your help.

They are onboard. It's not a matter of putting in what they have lieing around. There are at least two different boards that have been used on the series though ... one with a SmartLink modem (it's what I have ... definately V.92), and the Conexant (I'm not familiar with it).

What you are seeing is the generic description of the modem (56K ITU V.92...) and the actual model in your system. The Conexant modem is a V.92 modem, as V.92 is the standard protocol for 56K dialup, and has been for about three years now (replacing V.90 as the standard).

I do understand that the 56K ITU V.92 is the generic description, but unfortunately, this modem is not V.92. Wish it was!!!! I've been all over the modem in the control panel and there is absolutely nothing about "V.92" or any settings that might suggest it's here. When I called Gateway to ask about my modem (Conexant Soft K56 Data Fax Modem, manufactured in 2003) the support tech told me that they do not put V.92's in notebooks, which I did not believe. They referred me to Best Buy, where I purchased it. When I called Best Buy to ask why the modem was not as advertised, they simply apologized for their website error Thanks for the help.

Looks like they made one notebook with the super special non-v.92 onboard modem for these machines

I think you're right That's OK, been thinking about it, I don't wanna be bothered by incoming phone calls when I'm on the net anyway! If work needs hubby, they can call his cell

It IS a V.92 modem - it's the same one my 7405GX has, and it does use the V.92 protocol. The Gateway reps don't know jack sh*t about the 74xx series, because they're retail-only models.

I checked on the modem in my 7410GX, and it appears to have the same Conexant SoftK56 Data Fax Modem. I checked online, and the preinstalled driver (v7.03) is complerely v.92 standards compliant. So I ran the general AT command AT+MS=? and it returned "+MS: (B103,B212,V21,V22,V22B,V23C,V32,V32B,V34,V90,V92 ),(0,1),(75-33600),(75-33600),(75-56000),(75-56000)" showing that v.92 is definitely supported. So, when the modem was listed by Gateway as 56 K ITU V.92 ready Fax/modem, they were correct. Any support person who informed you that a v.92 compliant modem is not installed, or stated that it was incorrectly listed, obviously did not know what they were talking about.

This brings us to what your actual concern may, or may not have been. It appears as though you may have been looking for the applet to control the v.92 Modem on Hold feature. Bad news is... The applet is not included with the Conexant driver and requires either a separate software installation (which Gateway does not appear to supply), or an initialization string added to the modem connection. The software applet for Conexant is NetWaiting, and you can download it here: http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=108371 (Dunno if it works or not, I don't have use for it, but I did go ahead and installed it, and got it to run, so it appears as though it might work) Hope this helps.
