Anyone know when they will be coming out?

Hopefully, the new Seagate Momentus 100gb 7200rpm HD will be out within the next 2 to 3 months.

As you can see here, the iXPS2 comes with a 100GB 7200 RPM drive:

I believe the preproduction 100GB 7200rpm laptop drives out there being tested are the HGST (7K100?) units...

Do they come with a 'red' line tachcometer, to prevent from R.P.M. overeving it?
I believe Autometer got that contract

I don't think they need a tachometer, as they only spin at one speed. It's kind of like a pregnance test. It's either on or off. Of course spinning up is a lot of fun.

Great, perhaps the retail units will be hitting the streets, soon. Thanks for that info.

My big concern is that there won't be an ATA version of the new 7.2k drives and they just release SATA versions. I am planning to kit out the 8600 at the end of the year with a 7.2k drive (I'd prefer a 100gb or equivalent) and I don't want to go backwards getting a 60gig Hitachi

Yeah, I was planning to upgrade my 40 gig to the 60 gig 7.2k. Do you guys suggest to wait for the 100gig 7.2k, or would it be pointless cause they are not going to make it for us ATA owners?? Any thoughts??

I'm expecting a 100gb 7200rpm to be available at the end of march. This is based on a future system advertisement from Dell. Also, I've seen a post that stated Seagate will release their 100gb 7200rpm notebook drive in mid April.

Not to worry . . . The ATA units will be made for retail. That is based as per my e-mails with Seagates' Disc Presales Dept.
