8790 Has just died??

I have a Sager 8790-S

I was using the computer around 11pm tonight, and was typing away using AIM, and MS Word, and everything just died. The computer acted as if power was cut from it, there was no shut down warning, no fans running, no warning sounds, just stopped. the power brick's green light is on, but the computer is not recieveing any power from it i guess. the 3 lights on the outside and inside of the computer that show mail, battery and AC power are all blank (off completly).

I have removed the battery for about a hour, and held the power button in for about 60 seconds, then i replaced the battery, and pressed power and nothing happend.

The computer is currently sitting on the table, battery in place, but AC power removed. no periferals (sp?) are connected.

I have owned this computer sience August, and have had no major issues with it. as a materof fact, this is the 6th computer (2nd laptop) i have ever owned (sience 1993), and is the best todate (spec and reliability)

I am unsure if it is a static discharge effect, i am carfull when using it, but i typaclly use the external keyboard, and mouse. (i prefer the external when typing long reports)

I suppose it could be a random massive hardware failure. I have tested the mouse and keyboard on another computer...both appear to work normal.

With no other problem history with this machine, this is a bit of a suprise.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or should i just call sager and set up a RMA?

Thank you for anyhelp you can give

- Damian

Get you an RMA, this happened to me about 3 weeks ago. It is the Motherboard. I got mine in June so if this is a major issue we should see more people having the same problem. I had no issues with mine either till that day it went off.

i just got my RMA number....
I read somewhere on the forum here you are supposed to remove your hard drives and RAM before, is this true?

i know its a motherboard issue...based on what i was told by PC Torque, and my peers on this forum.

Never heard anything ever about removing anything beforehand. Email Rick for particulars on what you need to do regarding your RMA.

Hey, when you get it back, if the motherboard has the words "die you stupid piece of *" etched into it, you got mine.

Seriously, to find out what you get back that is original, mark in someplace innocious and non-damaging and using a non-damaging method the parts you suspect to be needing replacing. That way you can find out what was the broken parts. This only works for the user accessable places. Don't remove the case to mark the mobo or the video card.

Also, while I'd remove any porn you have on your hard drives I would just send them the entire unit (including the hard drives). They remove them anyway and put in their own diagnostic units. This also has the benefit of them replacing your own hard drives if they failed.

Don't forget to save the shipping box when you get it back becuase you're going to need it again and again.

i sent it monday morning...USPS Priority Post, with insurance and delivry confermation.

I wanted to get USPS Priority Post, with Insured Resgistered Mail and signiture confermation, but the Post office said they could only give me what was listed above.

so...if sager gets it wednesday, and start work right away, they will be done friday, and can ship it monday. With UPS Ground, i should get it back on the 21st..with a new MOBO that hopefully wont be SEMC's and say "die you stupid piece of ****"

How much did you insure for, and how much did shipping et all end up costing you?

Is it worth it to go for the faster postage back from there also? I really want to have my computer for spring break... so I can have something to game on when I'm not at home with my PC.

It ended up costing me $68 dollars total, and i insured for $3600.

Priority Post is a 2 day thing.

That was cheaper than my UPS shipping of $91.00 2nd day.

Wow was I relieved to find this post. My sager 8790-S died on me last night with conditions identical to what you described. I had it on for about 25 minutes running only IE and Trillian and it just blacked out. The leds went out although it was plugged into AC and the power button was completely unresponsive. After removing the battery and trying it all again it remained completely dead. deb i too got mine in August and have not had a single problem ... other than this huge one. I will call sager later today, but I am not thrilled that i have to send it in from school and wait on repairs. When sager responded did they indicate what you would be billed for motherboard repair/replacement? I'm going to look into that USPS insured mail now. I cant tell you how usefull this thread has been. thanks.

ummm...if you bought your in august too....then its under warentey. all you should have to be paid for is the shipping.

as far as the USPS goes i would go with:
Priority Post
Registered Mail with Insurance
and Signiture Confermation.

It should only be like $50. enless your post office is gonna be a pain in the butt like mine, and give me a inferior service at higher prices, and refuse to give you what you want. but i think that was an outlier from the norm.

In cases of sending expensive items, I'd send UPS/FedEx/other private company. You get a tracking number and you don't have to fight tooth and nail for an insurance settlement (well, not as badly as w/ the USPS). I've heard some nasty stories from USPS customers trying to get settlements paid for damaged/lost goods. Having worked for UPS, I've seen the opposite end where totally undeserving customers got paid even though they didn't deserve it.

Just my 1/2 cent worth.
