Bad news for 7700 owners? - Page 5

I just hope you don't get the twitchy chirping cpu fan disease my 7700 arrived with. Sager has put out a bios fix for the same problem but I believe it makes the fans spin all the time. AW didn't have a clue what I was talking about when I called for tech support so I honestly wish I had gone with the XPS2 at this point. The 7700 is fast but it has issues. You might want to get a cooling pad!

I don't see how this is bad news for Alienware users, it's not like the 7700s are going to stop working when the XPS2 starts shipping. And the 7700 probably benches higher than the XPS2 in gaming due to the P4 over the P-M

Yeah the XPS Gen 2 actually fairs really well. It will be interesting though to see how well once the Area51-M 7700 is outfited with an ULTRA card. I think the AW model will beat the DELL. So all in all if I had purchased a notebook I would still go AW for upgradability

The world's first "true" mobile desktop?????

Don't mind the comparison but this seems a little desperate or deceptive to me or am I missing something??

What is it that the XPS is not having that Alienware has?

If it is 533MHz isn't it the 4200 series??

I also like how they put the FSB on their for comparison purposes, I also notice how they just put "yes" next to the USB ports, not listing that the XPS 2 has 6 and the 7700 has 4, they listed that the 7700 has 2 firewire ports and the XPS2 ha 1 firewire port. I also like how they just put "yes" next to 17" widescreen display and didnt bother putting Dells max resolution, 1920x1200, and the 7700s max resolution, 1680x1050. Nice try alienware, but please be truthful

I like they way they make the P4 seem likes it's a huge plus and then have to itemize the HT part separately. Same thing with inflating the dual hd option into 3 separate categories. Then they conveniently leave out a few important stats like noise, battery life, heat generated, weight and the fact that the XPS 2's single video card option is probably faster than the two the 7700 offers combined. Pathetic....and desparate.

On the list it states that the dell doesn't have pci-e x16. What's with that?

lol the comparison is down now.. the page is there but has no comparo.. hmm.

I know we been giving AW some crap about their 7700. I wonder however, how we will react to the 7700 when it has the Ultra available. I know, I know. They are slow getting it out, hopefully they want to make things right. I'd be interested to see a DELL vs AW once the Ultra is on both machines. That should give you a better idea who is #1. Right now it's not real fair, imo DELL is faster because of the GPU

I can see the "comparison" up.

I think the fsb comparison is fair. Not so much in terms of the CPU, but if/when AW gets a comparable GPU, the 800MHz should give it an edge.

The USB/firewire sophestry is shameful, however. I'm willing to believe that some of the other obviously incorrect stuff (pci-express, memory...) is due to marketing's ignorance of their product.

As for the rubberized grips, yeah they're pretty sharp on the AW. A friend of mine has one, and they feel really nice. Thing is, the XPS1 quicksnap covers (at least the Skullz) are also rubberized. They're not the hard plastic shells that the other snapcovers are. I got one for my 9100, not so much for the look, but for the feel.

IntgrSpin,

Just yesterday was introduced and saw for the first time the infamous "comparison" page by a co-worker. At first glance I was taken aback as the one who showed it to me expounded about how the "proof" is right there as to how much better the 7700 is over the XPS2.

If unaware of the misrepresentation any uninformed prospective buyer could easily be persuaded that the 7700 was the only way to go between the two choices!!

I wouldn't be so naive as to say that it is "marketing's ignorance of their product". This is as slick and deceptive as it gets. Desperate people do desperate things and this rat has been backed into a corner and is showing its' true colors.

Don't know exactly how long this gem of marketing mischief has been on their website but seeing from other posters, it has been there at least from 02-28-2005 by sonicwind's counterpost, thats two weeks!! Nobody at alienware has caught it yet?? Come on, give me a break.

You're probably right. I'm just trying to extend benefit of the doubt.

Every day it's up looks worse and worse for AW.

This (if intentional) goes beyond "business is business", and "caveat emptor". This is a company I wouldn't trust to honor things like warranties.

I'd like to point out that these tactics are largely unnecessary. I didn't buy my Mustang because it was the fastest car on the road. I just liked the look and feel of it. Similarly, I almost bought an AW several times, not because it was the fastest, but because I like the look. I'm now finding myself turned off.

call me shallow...

Now if AW made the 7700 with the new mobile AMD, and the 6800U they would have competition witht the XPS 2. I like the 7700 but the XPS 2 is much more user friendly in terms of weight and Batterylife, both of those you'd expect with purchasing a laptop. I used the XPS gen 1 with a 9800 pro, and 3.4ghz EE chip, badass laptop, but sucked because it wasn't really mobile (needs to see the charger alot).

A laptop with a battery life of over 2hrs while keeping up with my X800XT PE is utter genius.
