Holy smoke, x600 PCI-E has outstanding performance!!

Wow, well, instead of going for a

acer TM 8100 pentium m 1.6 533fsb MR x700 128mb

i went for a

acer aspire 1693 pentium m 1.8 533 fsb MR x600 128mb

Really because i will be music making MORE than gaming so the extra few cpu mhz is needed more than the few extra grfx mhz

now on games, i thought i would get average performance, lower/med res, details on medium settings no aa/af.... which i could live with..

damn did i get supprised. I installed and loaded up UT 2004 and set it to 800x600 and put a few details up to high. It ran well, i thought hmm max it out a bit, find the limit.

I put it up to 1280x800 and left the detail settings as above, still ran fine.. wow i thought, so i upped the detail settings to max and thought well this is gonna push it, All details on HIGH/highest so it says "holy sh*t" when you apply em, and it still ran like a dream, smooth as anything.

Right this was with 2x AA so i exited and upped everything up to max, FS AA up to 6xT3 and AF up to 16x forced, and vertical sync.

IT STILL WORKED, it was very easily playable, it wasn't ideal (stat fps showed 26/28 average) but it ran ok. I chose a map with a lot of bots and action/scenery, i reckon putting AF/AA to 4x maybe 8x and you could average 35+ fps in UT2004

Well, this really supprised me. to say im pleased is an understatment. The x600 pci-e has slightly lower clock than 9700 but has quite a bit higher memory clock which makes a big difference apprently.

So just had to share all of this with you, feel free to comment/ask questions and please post some of your notebook/game experiences, id love to hear them,.

Many thanks

The X600 being about the same speed as the 9700 isn't saying much; the 9700 is pretty old these days. I do believe that the mobility X800 is 3 or 4 times faster, and the Geforce Go 6800 Ultra is probably even faster.

I realy glad to hear that you like your notebook and your getting good FPS with your card. And for all the haters out there it works for him so leave it be

what laptops come with the x600 as standard or option?

HP ZD8000/Compaq X6000 both come with X600 with 64/128/256 meg options. HP is CNET's top rated desktop replacement; X6000 is the (less expensive) Compaq option.

Regards.

Gateway M460? You'll have to call in for the 128 meg video option. It's avaialbe but it's taken off their site. I just talked to a CSR earlier today.

dell D810 comes with it as well.

If HP cost to much look at the X6000

I have an Acer Travelmate 4601WLMi. This is available in belgium for about 1500€ and carries a Centrino 1.6 (dothan 2mb), X600 64mb, DVD writer and 15.4" widescreen TFT (working on a review...)

The performance of the X600 has also surprised me. It runs UT2004, HalfLife2, World of Warcraft and even EverquestII pretty well. Only thing I need to do is set texture quality a notch down from high because the 64mb memory seems to cause some problem when using high-quality textures (lots of hd access...)

I bought this laptop to tide me over 'till the 8401 is available here but I must admit I like this laptop a LOT. If the X600 had 128mb, I think I wouldn't even consider upgrading to the 8401 anymore!

GPU is more important that 200mhz processor more processor speed....but you probably ended up saving money on that tso thats good

coxy: I can run UT2004 at highest settings too (well, high in-game + 4xAF, no AA) at 1280x800, but I notice quite a bit of harddrive access, especially at the beginning of a level load. I know UT2004 does some kinda of pre-caching of the textures so this might be the cause of the stuttering.

there's NO way I can run UT2004 at the highest settings with max AA/AF on my laptop, especially due to the lower vid memory I think. Wish I could put more vidram in it :/

this is my 3DMark2001 score on the 4601WLMi:

The X800 and Go6800 isn't that great. they are about 80% faster than a MR9700 but with 35% more power drain. The X600 is about 10% faster than the MR9700 and the X700 is about 45% faster using about the same power as a X600/MR9700 so unless all you do is play FPS games (than you are better off with a Shuttle Box). A laptop with the MR9700/X600/X700 would still offer the best all around performance.
