Best Softwares for Sagers

Thread Starter
Something I just realized about my Sager is that there is going to be almost no bundled software. I'm on a limited budget, and would rather not pirate software in these subpoena-happy times.

I got the business bundle from PCTorque, so that covers a lot of things.

However, I am still missing certain categories of software.

Burning Program: Is Nero 6 worth $100? Can I find it elsewhere cheaper, such as an OEM copy?

Facsimile Software: I use BVRP Phonetools that came with my USR modem. Is there something out there that is cheap or free that is of quality if i can't get phonetools to work on the sager?

DVD Playback Software: How well does Windows Media Player handle this? What are some good, cheap replacements?

Download Manager: I use GetRight right now, and I like it, however it's not an honest installation. Is there something cheap or free, again?

Are there any other essentials I'm missing? I already have WinXP Pro (myself) and will have Norton Anti-Virus 2003 Corporate Edition (thank you Westminster College).

As for DVD playback I find windows media player to be just fine. There are also a lot of free players out there, none that I can reccomend though. Just stick with WMP.

As for nero, I would NOT pay 100 dollars for it. I have a copy of nero that came with my Sager and I like it but I would not have paid 100 dollars for it. I am sure there are much cheaper alternatives, like an OEM copy.

I'm looking for a home entertainment center software? Anything like that available? I'mm looking something to edit organize videos and photos. Also, something for mp3's and dvd's to keep them fairly organized and possibly to edit them. I'm looking for something similar to making it Windows XP Media Center.

I can recommend a freeware player that plays back DVD, SVCD, VCD, Divx/Xvid etc..

It's called Media Player Classic (MPC), and it's also open source.

The actual project page:

I just had a thought: Why would you buy used software? I could probably bet big bucks on the fact that whoever is selling the software has made a copy for themselves. Thus, both the buyer and the seller will be using pretty much the same license (key, etc.) and therefore both parties will be using the software illegally; and if its illegal, why not spare yourself the $6 dollars and download an illegit copy right away.

Does my reasoning make sense?

P.S. I am not, in any way, promoting software piracy. Creators of good software must be rewarded for their work.

Yeah, that makes sense.

As long as you've got the original CD (and a receipt of a transaction) then you can’t really get into any trouble. If someone asks you can show them the original CD you bought and the receipt to prove you purchased it from another user, then you can’t really get into trouble, just the person who made a copy then sold you the original.

Otherwise I'd look into getting as much free software as possible (stuff like AV and adaware programs). The only software that should cost you money is the software that is truly worth the cost (things like Photoshop and Flash MX) but even then you can get huge discounts say if you're a student or you buy them OEM.

It's not used, it's brand new, never opened, and never registered. Totally legit.... why would you assume I'd buy used software???

Has anyone else used SlimBrowser from Flashpeak? I love it. It is a tabbed browser with lots of extras. The neatest new feature (to me) is the simulated 5 button mouse. Hold down right click and click left to go back a page. Hold down left click and click right to go forward. Ingenious.

Thanks for the other software suggestions. MPC looks great.

I didn't assume; its just you cant get proof that the package hasn't been opened yet if you buy through EBay.

Yeah, they call that feature in the browser (Mouse Gestures).

Opera was the first to introduce this to the browser market,
and the rest just seem to have followed.

Mouse gestures are one of the best features to hit the browser -
market. And Opera is simply the best internet browser experience.

But we all have our taste in web browser code
