Thread Consolidation: All Discussion of AMD Turion 64 - Page 15

Here's a little bit more on the MSI 635...looks very nice, only small annoyance to me would be the screen resolution, WXGA...

...Next up is the M635, in opposition to the M645, this is an AMD and ATI powered machine featuring an AMD Turion CPU with an ATI Mobile Radeon X700. It has the same 15.4” Super Glare WXGA screen as the M645 running native at 1200x800 and having the same features as well with a 4 in 1 card reader, dual layer DVD combo drive and optional Bluetooth.

There's a review of a couple Turion laptops, the Acer Aspire 5001, Asus A6K and a MSI m635 here including both 32 and 64 bit benchmarks, and battery life tests. There's also a sonoma LG LS70 Express thrown in for comparison. Too bad it's in polish, but the plots speak for themselves. Some conclusions about the MSI from the article:
- good battery life ( ~3 hours )
- good keyboard, poor (low sensitivity) touchpad
- random port placement
- good screen with great viewing angles (but only WXGA)
- very good performance ( MT-37 )
- some build quality issues, but probably due to the fact that the reviewed model was still a non-retail sample...
Is there a service like babelfish for polish?

EDIT: and is it me or does the MT-37 on the M635 really clean house vs the other processors?

EDIT2: lol and the M635 beat out the LG on battery life - so the battery life of the turion is impressive vs the sonoma

It isn't impressive, I'm sure that the Sonoma still kicks the Turion in battery tests... it just makes 64-bit computing that much closer to having high performance levels but still allow for high mobility times away from desk or outlet.

It'll be interesting to compare reviews for the 4100 and 4200 since the only real difference is the processor (well, same with 8100 and Ferrari) so we'll finally be able to compare the battery life and power of the Turion and Pentium M.

I'd pick the 4100 over the 4200 for a couple reasons
1-It's going to be at least $100 cheaper which I could put towards buying a shuttle case/hardware for my desktop I'd have to use for gaming
2-It's 64-bit. I'm going to be doing computer science so I'm sure 64-bit would be handy. I'd also say future-proofing but if they do use a 1.6ghz Turion it might not be so fast by the time 64-bit is mainstream.

Well the Ferrari is ML-37, so at 2.0GHz I'm sure it will keep up with the 1.86GHz PM... lol. It is also cheaper than the 8104, and it has the same video card. It also looks MUCH better.

A subject that has et to be touched about the turions, well atleest from what I've read is overclocking, im very intrested with tweaking the turions a little bit and see what kind of results are produced *PRAYS TO JESUS*

which market?

the comprehensive list in the first post is awesom! thanks P.

I'm wondering what you'd think about noting what markets these are going to sell in? I know for me, that would easily let me know which computers i have to choose from... thanks for all your research!!

anyone have any new news about those Arimas on the list? Comparing them with the others, they seem to be the best combination of power and portability.

Arimas typically wind up as HP/Compaqs or as Gateways...once we get more releases from resellers I'll try to clean up the list a little bit (remove the OEM/ODM companies, i.e. Arima, and replace them with their corresponding reseller). When I get more time, I'll try to do a little bit more research into what markets the Turions will be selling in...

...once again, if you see any info on hardware or news sites, please post it, all information is good information...unless it's bad information, then it's not so good.

Oops. Forgot the 8104 only has a 1.86ghz P-M. Make sure you post a good review when you get yours!

Seeing as this has fallen onto the third page, I'd like to add that MSI is now saying the MS-1013 is avaliable in "Millenium Silver" as the previously mentioned well as Pearl White and Stealth Black. Looks like a very styling machine.

Also the link to the barebone MS-1029 has been activated ... hopefully a release is imminent, because I 'm waiting for this one (M635) ... and I still don't see any shipping dates on websites
post #294 of 334
If found this shop selling the MSI M635 in Germany, probably not shipping yet, but check out the screen! It's WSXGA+ I wonder if that's a typo...

Same - I was going to get the Averatec 4100 but this has a bigger battery (8-cell instead of 6-cell), is a bit more portable and has better graphics. Anyone know of any websites we could contact to get more info?
Here's a german review
of the Targa Traveller 826T (built on the MSI M635 barebone). The google translation is pretty funny, dB gets translated as railways
not much new information, though.
I found another review here , this time it's in Czech or Slovakian, I'm not sure, but there's lots of quality pictures of both the MEGABOOK S-270 and M-635, plus some benchmark results.

Edit: The lanuage seems to be Serbian, if you're desperate, you can translate portions of the text with this ...

One thing I think would be good would be to include whether or not the HD supports SATA and/or 7200rpm harddrives...these are some "new" tech for laptops.

Also, MSI has a few more tricks up its sleeve....

I was looking at the S270 and MS1013. How do you guys think the integrated ATI graphics stack up to the x700? I like the 270 and 1013 because of the size/weight, but if the graphics suck compared to the x700, then I will be forced to get the 1029.
(When available)
The MSRP on the 270 is attractive ($1400)

Also, if I purchase a pre-configured system, is it possible to install a faster CPU? I have pretty much replaced everything on a computer but I have never touched the CPU. I saw some instruction for it online and it looks very simple. When you think about it, working on computers is very very simple. A lot of people spend tons of money taking their computers to shops when they can do most of that stuff themselves.

Thanks for the help!
