Thread Consolidation: All Discussion of AMD Turion 64 - Page 16

The graphics aren't bad, but they don't compare to the x700. From what I've heard, the 200M lags behind the x300 in most things, and the x300 is behind the 9600 in old games and matches it in newer games. Performance on an x700 is roughly twice the old 9600/9700, so a 200M might be 1/4 of the performance of the x700. It does perform better than intel's integrated graphics though. However, 1/4 the performance of an x700 is still enough to run old games very well and new games on low/medium detail/resolution.

That link is down atm, but thanks.

Another big advantage that the 2oom chipset has over the Intel Extreme graphics is that it is manufactured by a major gpu company and will have its support and drivers. For instance, the Intel igp can run Guild Wars technically, but driver errors cause the game to crash whenever a character's inventory is opened. That won't be fixed by the developers (Arena Net) because they don't support 3rd party GPUs (anything other than nvidia or ati). That's one the the main reasons I want the S270 over the 4100 (and its a bit smaller and has the 8-cell), but I'm afraid it's out of my pricerange.
for those interested in the s270, looks like it is out now, check xmeld.com or mwave or whoever else carries the MSI brand.
The link is back up btw

That laptop would be SWEET if it's the right price...

MWave doesn't carry the MSI brand. At least I can't find it...

Xmeld has it on PREORDER.

It looks good, especially if it's going to be at a cheap price point.

The widescreen 15.4" screen on this notebook is the perfect complement to the powerful ATI X700 graphics card (128mb) for gaming or watching DVDs, along with your everyday work. At less than 6.5lbs.... .....Shipping Mid-July
http://www.xmeld.com/html/msi1029.html

^That is the 15.4inch MSI with ATI X700! On preorder and the barebone is $890. The 12inch S270 barebone is $830 - so if size doesn't matter to you that's like upgrading to the X700 for $60. For all of you who were able to hold off ordering the ferrari - there's something to wait for now.
$890 is way too much. It's more than even the Asus Z70V!!!

This laptop is supposed to be "value", guys. So wait until the price becomes reasonable.
more than the z70v with a DVD recordable?

the MSI 1029 includes the optical drive. ISTNC's Z70v with dvdrw is $928.00

screen on the 1029 is WXGA though.
Exactly.

WXGA screen, plus MSI isn't a longstanding player in the laptop market known for their high quality laptops.

Turion platforms are also by default, cheaper.

Until MSI decides to pay me, I won't argue about it. Asus definitely has the history behind it over here.

but they've been making great motherboards and video cards for a long time, and as the owner of 2 MSI notebooks, they are put together at least as well as Asus, and their 12" portables that I think are better than Asus. Their 510c laptop has a chassis design and cooling system far better than any Asus has ever put out.

Their big problem is getting their models to market in time to catch the current tech wave. They seem to be about 4 months behind, bringing out systems with the ati 9600 when the 9700s are coming out, for example. And with prices that are just as high as Asus, you have to beat them in some way to garner market share. Plus there just aren't that many resellers, while you have your choice (and price competition) of Asus retailers.

plus they offer, so far, only xga screens, when many picky notebook users want SXGA. but they do have the same LiveUpdate capability that their desktop systems have. (i do need to get paid now)

but they DO have a cheesy corporate video that is pretty classic, complete with fake flying camera balls and marriage proposals that have nothing to do with anything. http://www.msicomputer.com/msiresell...anyProfile.wmv

I'm considering buying a S270 from xmeld but I ave a few questions...

1-When I configure one and put it in my shopping cart I have the chance to enter a coupon code. Anyone know where I can get some? My google'ing has proved fruitless.
2-Should I just buy the case barebones and buy the other stuff separately? How hard would the installation be? The only thing I'm not sure about is where to get the Turion...

I really would like to get one of these but the Dell 700m is looking really nice right now with that 35% off coupon! Thanks for vouching for their build quality shark!

I'm looking to buy this very same notebook from Xmeld.com aswell.

1. The coupons are for students and military

2. I would buy all components from Xmeld.com. They come really cheap! And the do the assembly testing for free. Also you can opt for extended warranty and support.

Also future upgrades, components or peripherals for it you get free shipping on.

I'm just waiting for some benchmarks and the MSI 6855 WLan/Bluetooth combo card (or I might have it shipped when available and install it myself)
Whats with the Super Gloss screen on the MSI 635? . You can check the oke's reflection in the screen. This is a feature??

Students meaning college students or what? How would one obtain such a coupon? (Looking for a notebook for collegework) ty
post #314 of 334
I think there is diffrent versions! Xmeld.com and now www.msicomputer.com says ANTI-Glare Type display...
The anti-glare display is matte, I think.

BTW, I'm interested in the student discount as well

OMG, I forgot to mention one totally annoying aspect of MSI's is the function key and the ctrl key are swapped around on the keyboard. Why oh why ? ;p

Ctrl should always be bottom left.
It's swapped for the Dell 9300 as well

bugs me too, but you get used to it. what's worse is the full-size toshiba my work bought me doesn't have the Windows key next to the lower ALT button, it's up on the upper right side of the keyboard.

it's like they do it just to be different. Shouldn't be that hard to allow different keyboards or easy mapping and key-swapping.
Yup, if anything, you can just remap the keys

Trust me, it doesn't take that long to get used to
