How bad is it to use unequal memory modules?

Hey all,

I've often heard that it isn't good to use unequal memory modules (eg a 256Mb stick and a 512Mb stick).

How true is this? Right now I have two 256Mb sticks of PC2700 DDR Ram in my Toshiba Satellite M30X-104. Want to upgrade, but only want another 512Mb of memory to make it 768Mb in total. Bad idea? Or is the unequal memory modules thing just a myth?

its just a myth. since some computers max memory is 1.25 GB or 1.5GB that would be 1 GB stick and 1 256mb or 1 Gb and 1 512 so your good with 1 512 and 1 256

I agree with nysstratus, total myth. Take a look at Toshiba's web page and you'll see that they even offer some models with 512+256 modules just the way you want. I can't imaine them offering it if it wasn't "safe". What you should watch out for are the memory speeds though. In some cases mismatching the speeds will hinder performance, while in others it just won't work. In other words make sure that if you have PC2700, to get a 512 module of PC2700. If you get less it either may not work or both modules will run at the lower speed.

as long as you put the same speed of ram (preferably same make as well) you should have no problem, the reason why i say same make is because its better to have the same timings, ive noticed some ppl have problems running memory intensive apps with diffrent ram speeds and timings

Excellent, thanks a lot of the info guys!

Hmmm, the "same make" advice puts a crimp in my plans, but I intend on going from 512+256 now to 512+512 eventually, so I might risk it...

Muh hahah. 1Gb here I come!

if it\'s dual channel memory then you would want to use matching pairs of SODIMMs. Your M30X is not dual channel, so you can mix 512 + 256 sticks, just make sure it\'s PC2700 and same CL like pr50wner said. Use name brand ram with lifetime warranty, and free exchange if for some reason it doesn\'t work..
