So why did you order an XPS2 over other brands?

Because of the light weight, performance, looks and longer battery time.

Dell has awesome warranty/complete care so thats mainly why.

The Sager/Alienwares are too big, generate too much heat and offer features I don't need.

I didn't really research other laptops and chose the XPS 2.

I chose one of the other popular DTR gaming machines. Reason is stated in my post.

Dell doesnt have the lame restocking fee's the other companys have if you decide to return em. That say's alot about a company.

I ordered through Dell University and paid $2700 for the system in my sig. Considering that it's the same price I'd pay for a sager/alienware, and it has a 3 year complete care warranty included in that price, the XPS2 is far superior.

I also like the XPS 2 looks better than any other laptop of that size, and I want a pentium M with the best graphics card available in my laptop. The XPS 2 is at least 2lbs lighter than the sager 9860/alienware 7700, has twice the battery life, and 50%-60% more performance in games.

One more thing, I will never buy an alienware because I've heard too many horror stories and lawsuits involved with that brand. If you get really angry with Dell, they usually throw you a few bones to make you happy again. AlienOrXPS is right on those restocking fees....if you aren't sure, you can at least try a Dell and return it without paying more than shipping costs.

It's always a matter of the best compromise. I really need at least 2 hours battery life. But I've really grown attached to 17 inch glossy screen, too. Currently it comes down to using a Pentium M. I really think the 9300/9200 is ugly. But the iXPS2 is somehow cool looking. Even though it is basically the same case with different coloring and labelling, in the pictures it looks cool. The video card seems awesom, I wanted something that was at least X700 or greater. The screens on the 9200 were unacceptable and I won't keep the iXPS2 for 1 day, if the screen is not great. I will not pay 3k for anything less than great.

I got the XPS 2 for pretty much the exact reasons you listed as well. Companies that have terrible customer service (no matter how good the product) do not get repeat business from me and I usually advise people to stay away from them. Case in point is Cingular, the motorola phone I got with their service died after 3 months so they sent me a replacement and as required, I sent the dead one back to them. Well few months pass by and they decide to bill me $265 for the phone I already sent back to them. I call them and tell them that it was returned and they subtly hinted that I was lying about it. Then they "escalated" it and found out that they did indeed receive it but hadn't logged it into their systems. Now 2 months later, they STILL haven't removed the charge from my account despite having called them 10 times about it. Once I get this crap removed and my contract expires, I'm never dealing with Cingular again.

Anyway, I digress, I had a Dell i8100 before and was really impressed with Dell customer service so that already was a positive point in their favor before I started looking for my next laptop. The discounts using Dell University didn't hurt much either, couple all the above with the looks, light weight and long battery life of the XPS 2, it was a pretty simple choice.

i ordered the ixps gen 2 after very much deliberation and the other notebook i had in mind was the aw 7700. it was really a tough choice because the 7700 had so much upgradeability option to it, plus it has dual hdd and dual cd drives, which are extremely useful when backing up and burning cds, and other desktop activities. however, the ixps gen 2 won me over hands down with the ultra card, it's just too much of a temptation, plus i get discounts since i'm buying from my university. well my previous experience with dell hasn't been totally satisfying since i am pretty much on my own after i get the system (one of the reasons i chose aw cause they have respawn cd, which can save a lot of time in case of computer crashes, etc). but i personally don't think the ixps gen 2 is cool looking, the design is kinda weird... oh well but for what's under the hood, i can live with that.

Why XPS2

I did eenie-meenie-miene-moe and Dell won.

I actually had a 9860 on order from Discountlaptops, but i cancelled it as soon as i saw the availability on the Dell.ca site. My main reason was because of Dell's Complete Care. I've had many laptops in the past, and they've ALL have had issues at one time or another... and complete accidental coverage, well, you just can't beat that, especially since i'll be carrying this around almost every day.

Are you kidding?!?!? Look at the dang benchmarks from e.g. Tom's Hardware & etc. I mean, this thing BURIES top-end desktops!!! I've never heard of such a thing, and didn't even think it would ever be possible, but I'm darn-sure going to be a part of it now that I've discovered that it is!

I currently own a maxxed-out XPS Gen1, and the performance increase with the Gen2 in recent games (according to benchmarks of preview units) ranges from 1.8x to 2.9x...I only bought the Gen1 exactly one year ago today, so this doubling/trippling of graphics speed is completely unprecedented given Moore's law and the slowing of speed increases in CPUs we've been seeing the last 2-3 years...I can hardly believe I can buy a laptop one year later that will result in a 65 FPS increase in Doom3 scores, a doubling of my 3DMark2005 score, etc. etc. The choice is obvious...if it weren't for the Geforce 6800 ULTRA Dell has exclusive rights to now, the field would be open to competition since the regular 6800's don't increase performance that much over my 9800 mobility; as it is, however, the ULTRA absolutely blows the ATI9800 away with 2-3x the performance in current games...unbelievable but very welcome...

WOOHOO!!!!

I have been waiting for a laptop for about a year to compete with desktop performance. I almost settled with a 9100 8 months ago, but cancled it when I heard rumors of the xps2. After months went by, I saw nothing more than more rumors. I decided that the xps2 would not come out anytime soon, so I should probably order a sager 9860. I stopped when I realized that the battery only lasted a bit more than an hour, and you had to unscrew the damned bay just to put in another battery. It was just going to be too much of a hastle for me to bring to class. After a month more of waiting, the xps2! I think everything good has already been said about it in this thread and I went for it for all those reasons. At this point of time in waiting, money wasnt an issue at all, and so I pretty much loaded the system up!

I also think the XPS2 is very attractive, especially with the aluminum cover and flashy lights!

Other than awesome desktop equivalent video specs and overall 'Ultimate Gaming Machine'...
Being an Alienware owner and a Dell owner has taught me that onsite service with complete care is worth its weight in gold. AW support/depot is the worst I EVER dealt with and I've owned laptops from Toshiba, Acer, Compaq, Alienware, Dell, Dell and more Dell...
All support has it's goods and bads but bottom line is turnaround time and customer satisfaction

what i know about many computers is that once it's out of the factory, even though you have warranty, you're pretty much on your own. that i learnt the hard way when i invested in my i5150, because when i learnt about the overheating problem associated with this notebook, i tried to call dell but they said that there's no such problems with this notebook and that i should use it on a table and not my lap... but as many of you must have heard about the i5150's stories, i shan't elaborate. and plus the tech support people at dell are not very helpful, all of them told me that the i5150 can't handle the 7200rpm hdd, and i was like what? they're totally wrong. and in events when my computer graphics seem distorted or fuzzy when using internet explorer, they couldn't come up with any solution, whereas it's just a problem with one of the registry keys (change usehr=1 to 0) and after fixing that wella, my graphic is perfect. and guess where i got that info from? dell forum... so my main point is, all of us computer owners have to learn how to use a computer properly and "take care" of it. we can't really depend on warranties, etc because many of the times, we the computer owners know better than those tech support people.

where's the all of the above? except i have researched....

Performance to weight ratio laps the field. The possibility of a gaming laptop you can actually put on your lap without cooking something important... and it looks cool.

Quite a lot of votes, guess there's a lot of lurkers around.

I like the Ultra for sure, but I also like the fact that it is light. That it SHOULD have good battery life. Oh, and it's a Dell dude!

I expect a lot out of the support, I will put them to the test in the first month, and if I am let down, I may return it.

I was looking at the Sager 9860 but once I saw the specs on the XPS2 I had to have it.

It is faster than the 9860 (for games), lighter and it's a Dell.

I've owned 2 other Dell laptops and never had a problem with them.

I could do without the LEDs but they might grow on me.

Based on the benchmarks that he is referring to the 6800u does do some heavy damage against current top end desktop 'video'.
It might not bury the desktops but it does throw dirt on them
You might want to look at the articles before you attack.
Psycho, i have seen the articles and i wouldn't have attacked unless he uttered the word BURIED. Because as you say, they dont bury top end desktops. I acknowledge they are even pretty close to the top end desktop video but for how long anyway? a month? like it or not, even if the mobile game comes close to catching up, they will always fall under the desktop video again. until maybe nano technology revs up
