7200rpm HDD

Thread Starter
Hi,

I emailed my local acer service center regarding the upgrading of my 4200rpm HDD to 7200rpm.
-------------------
Their reply:
"The 7200 RPM HDD is much hotter in comparision to the 4200 RPM. For
notebook it is not advisable to install the 7200 RPM as notebook is very
compact and thus the the ventilation is not as good as a normal CPU."
-------------------
Mine:
"With regards to the 7200rpm HDD, it still puzzles me as to why Laptop
HDD manufacturers (Hitachi etc) would go ahead and and sell these HDDs
if there is a known issue with the heat generated. Would a 5400rpm HDD have the same problem with the heat?"
-------------------
Their reply:
"Thank you for the feedback.
Well, with regard to the 7200RPM by Hitachi, we are unable to comment on
that.

For your information, the below link will give the performance comparison
of different HDD rotation speed.
http://www.powernotebooks.com/articl...erformance.php

For TM4000 series, we would recommend to use the 4200RPm HDD. The faster
speed HDD 5400 RPM would also generate more heat but not as much as in
comparison to the obe with 7200 RPM.

As the information given by the link above, increasing the rotation speed
of the HDD will only increase the performance of the system by a small
amount.

FYI, According to the warranty, as long as the heat generated by the faster
rotation speed of HDD does not caused the system to break down, the
warranty will not be void."
------------------

Well, what do you guys think? Should I go for my upgrade? Has anyone done it on their TM4000 series?

I have upgraded my 4200rpm drive to the new hitachi 7200 60Gig drive,

The drive runs a lot cooler than the previous drive although the drive is a little nosier than the original. the laptop case from the top and bottom is a lot cooler and I fell very comfortable with the laptop sat on my lap, where as with the stock drive I could not rest my palm on the case for a prolong period.

The drive is very quick and windows boots up a lot quicker.

I have also replaced my stock optical drive with the new Matshita UJ845B drive (dual layer and 8X DVD burn), this is more tollerant with cheaper DVD's and will burn them at the stated rate whereas the stock would never burn faster than 2X. The only problem with this new drive is that the POST bootup is slower i.e. it takes an extra 45 second to come out of POST boot sequence before starting to load windows. I have told ACER and they say a new BIOS update is planned which will accept a wider range of optical drives.

My suggestion is go for it.
