I am a college student that is about to get a notebook. But i dont no wheter to get a Mac or PC.. Im not much on games on the computer but i want the best. I want speed, graphics, etc.

Thats why i cant decided between the powerbook or the new area 51m 7700 What should i do? Price is not an issue
post #2 of 29
I dunno about the crapple, but wouldnt the 7700 be too big and battery intensive for college? Those were my thoughts when i bought my laptop

alien might be a bit too power-hungry. take a look at the uniwill 259 model with ati 9700 256mb and p-m cpu, that should give you a happy mix of performance and managable size (15.4" wsxga?) and weight

"Crapple" that's really clever

Anyway, Crazie, if you want pure speed and the fastest laptop available than a PowerBook isn't for you right now since they are still using G4 chips, which, while they are pretty efficient and powerful, they are not the most powerful out there.

If, however, you want an intuitive, mainstream, virus and adware free operating system with a super stable Unix foundation, go with the Mac. iBooks have good battery life and with the cheapest one starting at 899 through educational discount, they're a pretty good deal. PowerBooks are cheaper than ever also, and if you get one you'll never want to use a PC laptop again because of how thin and and light it is.

Make sure that you wont have compatibility issues if you get a crapple (i thought id use it again, because its just so clever ). Contact your University before you buy anything and good luck with your purchase!

compatability issue? with what?

dood why are you trolling this forum?
People that are anti apple don't know, or, most likely, won't admit that there really aren't any compatibility issues anymore.

i know alot of universities have their own software programs for them but are only for windows platform, not macos. that would be a compatibility problem.

im still tossed up between a mac or a pc. I just want a fast with good proforamce computer. I was just impressed with the 3.6 processor with the dual hardrives on the alien...But i alos heard that the mac were good. Is there any other brands of laptops that i should look at? Once again price doesnt matter. I just want to make sure and get the best.

You can get a faster processor and video card PC for what lets say the 15" Powerbook would cost you. You can opt for the 128mb vram ATI Mobility 9700 if you buy it from the Apple Online Store. If you want a computer that is a joy to use where you don't have to worry about viruses and spyware and constant maintenance, and that has a great OS (remember Tiger is coming in just a few months) you'll be happier with a Mac.

What do you plan to use your computer for?
Do any classes in college require you to have a laptop. If so what is the software that you will be using?
Some colleges can give you discounts for Apple computers, maybe yours does too.
Are you a gamer? Hard core? if(you == gamer) {computer = Alienware;} else computer = apple;

do the apples come with a wireless card?
I'm able to play games just fine on my PowerBook. Not the latest and greatest, but I can play Halo and Neverwinter Nights and Sim City 4...those are the main games I play. Doom 3 is coming out for Mac in a couple months and I'm going to check that out too. I know I won't be able to play it with all the eye candy on, but it should still be playable.

G5s are "rumoured" to be coming out at the end of the year, but I wouldn't wait on them. If you really need a G5 you can sell your G4 and get one—though I wouldn't get a first revision G5 laptop anyway since they won't have all the bugs worked out.

All Power and iBooks come with wireless cards now.

Good idea. The 5500 is sort of a halfway house between the ultra light Sentia and the monster 7700.

craziebw,
in reviews by an owner of the new revision of the 15" powerbooks he was getting 3-3.5hrs. my friend w/ the 14" iBook w/ wireless on gets 5+. my iBook w/wireless on gets ~3:75-4:20, w/ wireless off ~5. the PBs will get less battery life most likely due to the bigger videochips in them, and aside from the 12", the larger screens.

um guys, the 5500 is supposed to give 2.2hrs of battery life. what about that is a selling point? so it's somewhere between absolute crap and what u should expect from a laptop for battery power? i got 2.2hrs out of my P3 600mhz machine 4+ years ago! alienware would do itself well to put out a PM gaming rig.

Very true, I have a PM in my laptop (2.o which i think is like a 3.4 on the P4 scale) and the battery life is great. 17 inch screen and a ATI 9700 vid card, i get about 3 hours with the small batt and 4 1/4 with the large batt (full brightness and wireless on)
