Wow, thanks for those last two links!

I am now going to get ZoneAlarm, maybe ZoneAlarm Pro, I haven't decided yet.
I am also going to get either NOD32 or Avast! Professional Edition. I am leaning towards NOD32, but am still open to opinions.

ive noticed nod32 updated 4 times in one day, norton has never done that, mcafee has never done that. i feel more secure with nod. also when im surfing websites alot of the banners will try and download trojans and stuff to your computer, nod32 has picked up everyone, norton has never picked up 1, im not sure if the trojan can do anything if its just sitting there in the temp folder but i still dont want it on my system. nod pops up right away asking if you want to delete or quanentine it

I professionally remove viruses.

Most of my really bad PCs I see have mcafee, fully updated. The others- norton, usually not updated, since alot of people get pissed at the "oh by the way, it'll be another 35 bucks to keep this running..."

I use both AVG and trendmicors products to scan machines, AVG free is a great product, IMO. It used to not catch all the trojans, but the newer 7.0 engine seems to be picking up the slack. Housecall.trendmicro.com is a great free scanner. Spybot S&D is a great anti spyware program. Between those 2, and running the firefox browser, I havent seen a single piece of spyware, let alone virus, in 6 months... actually, never gotten a virus.

Viruses are written for the most popular products, so they get the greatest amount of infections. IE, microsoft XP, Internet Explorer, and I see viruses duck Mcafee and Norton on a regular basis.

Mcafee is buggy, I have seen installs/uninstalls destroy PCs. Norton is a hog. If it did the job and was cheaper, I might change my opinion. It doesnt.

The only non mainstream program I have seen fail was avast. By fail, I mean the program is running on a machine full of viruses, and it isnt saying a word.

When the free products outpace and outperform the expensive on the shelf boxed products, I would say, save your money.

But not all of you out there- I need my customer base!

Thanks.
ZoneAlarm antivrus is actually Computer Associates EZ Antivirus integrated into ZoneAlarm. I tried the free trial of the ZoneAlarm Security Suite when it first came out and I didn't like it that much. I'd recommend Avast! Home Edition for antivirus. I've used it for almost a year and havn't had any trouble. The updates are free as long as you register every year (which is still free). For a firewall I'd recommend ZoneAlarm, but I'd highly suggest ZoneAlarm Pro for a more fully-featured firewall.

If you're still looking, give Trendmicro's PC-Cillin Internet Security 2005 a shot. PC-Cillin is one of the best Antivirus programs out there. Does a good job picking stuff up AND doesn't use very much resources (unlike Norton or McAfee). Plus, if you set the network security up to max, it does about as good as a job as Zonealarm for firewall purposes. There are daily updates for virus definations for Trendmicro, so they're very responsive to new viruses.

I've tried every single AV and Firewall and let me tell you that for a normal user the best are Sygate Firewall and Mcafee Enterprise. My university gave me the Mcafee Enterprise and it is a lot better than any other AV plus you can get a plugin that protects you against spyware and the Load of that AV is really low.

For computer protection, I'm using McAfee VirusScan (I have noticed the slowdown on shutdown, but such is life. I bought it, so I'll get my money's worth!), Microsoft Anti-Spyware (beta), Ad-Aware SE Personal, and Zone Alarm firewall. All told, I'm running a whole lot of processes right now! Thankfully, I got a gig of memory, so my system still runs great.

Id reccomend TrendMicro 2005 (thats what I am using ATM)
My runner up would most likey be ZoneLabs

I had used Norton for the longest time (much better over Macafee) but both companies are slacking.

if I had a 3rd option id go with the free alternatives.

Also, many users reccomended spyware programs which I do as well.

Spybot Search and Destroy
followed by Adaware

Good luck!

EDIT: Due to many people asking the same question over and over I typed up a guide that some find useful. You can find it here:

NOD32 is doing great. It takes up about 5megs of RAM, and it automatically updates withouht prompting me which is very nice. I have it very automated so it deletes stuff it doesnt like, and so far I have no viruses. Mind you, its only been about a week.

Do I really need another firewall on top of the one that comes with Service Pack 2 for XP???

I don't know too much about firewalls but the one that's included in SP2 seems to work OK...

What do you guys think?

I'd really strongly advise a better firewall. Something like the free version of ZoneAlarm would be best suited for your needs IMHO. With the Windows firewall, it doesn't do nearly as much as even basic firewall software. It will block most outside attempts at scanning your system, but offers almost no protection for outgoing data. With something like ZoneAlarm, you can make both outgoing and incoming data more secure, as well as monitor your connection.

One vote for the Zonelabs combo. I have used McAfee, Norton, and Symantec products, and as far as stand alone virus protection goes I would have the most confidence in SAV Corporate, but currently I use the Zone Alarm Security Suite and I have not had any trouble. I actually like having everything integrated into one interface. My computers are on a corporate network that is often targeted by hackers and viruses. Since I switched to the Zonelabs products I have noted a few infections on the computers of my office mates, but I came through unscathed. I have not tried the the free apps that have been mentioned so I cannot comment on them.

I avoid NOD32. For one thing it's not free like AVG, for another NOD32 is known to cause problems with other apps. Azureus for example.
