8886 mp3 player is a POS!

Things wrong with the MP3 player:

* fast forward/reverse/seek does not work
* No lock button
* Equalizer has undefined behaviour (as far as I can tell)
* "Clicking" noise.. like plugging in the headphones when the unit isn't on. Or when stopping.. or turning off/on.
* Although I haven't looked at the manual for what Khz this thing plays, it tries to play 56khz songs and ****s up pretty bad.
* Play skips first half a second for a song
* Play/Pause has unpredictable behaviour
* Some songs actually _skip_ like a cd..
* Most of the time the Power On/Off doesn't work ... Ihave to click it multiple times.

I have no idea how this POS passed QA. Makes me wonder about other components inside of this laptop (which so far I've liked) [on that note my 8886 has the Fn-bright and Fn-lessbright button wrong. ]

yeap, my 8886 has the same probs....i never used the display buttons, but they don;t work on mine either, and my mp3 player doesn't skip/scan like it should (in fact the forward/reverse buttons only pause a song for 2 secs, then resume at the same point)

BlueMeanie, might I suggest holding down the fast forward button? Maybe it moves forward in the song and not in the track.

The mp3 player is definitely not the best one you can get, as this thread will tell you. I doubt you bought the 8886 for its mp3 player anyway, but I do feel that they could have worked on it a little more.

No thats the thing, it doesn't work at all even if you hold it down. its a ****ing peice of ****!

yeah, i have what-sounds-to-be the same prob. as opus. I played w/ it for about 15 mins and the forward/back buttons have zero functionality (held down, double tap, nothing). The picture on the button is the " |<< >>| " type which would lead me to believe it should skip one entry forward/back and maybe (if held) scan entry. it does neither.

i would call sager for a replacement/explanation but i only expected to even use it as a little portable HD anyway, so i'm not really too miffed.

Upon closer "fiddling" i found that the "fn-f9" and "fn-f10" combos DO make my display brighten and dim a little, but it’s such a small amount it wasn't that useful. HOWEVER this doesn’t matter because if you use the advanced display menu under color you can adjust the brightness much more effectively, so again it won’t impact me that much.

CRITIQUES ASIDE: I LOVE THIS LAPTOP. It's a powerhouse, and it's stable.... i can live w/o an mp3 player (but it would have been nice)

Yes, it can be a nice convenient feature people are happy with, but it's not a top notch MP3 player. Some have arrived with problems and if yours does, get it exchanged. I'm not saying they're crap, but they're the weaker point of the 8886 people will say that are expecting an awesome MP3 player in ratio to how the notebook itself is built. That's why we offer the 8886 with the option to not get the MP3 player for $50 off.

Yea the mp3 player is pretty cheap, but I will agree with PCT that I am happy with it and find it really usefull when I want music. I mean, I usually dont skip tracks and actually look at the thing so it works great for me, turn it on, hit play and put it in your pocket. I will agree that a Lock/Hold feature would be VERY usefull because its all too easy to bump one of the buttons when its in your pocket.

My question regarding the mp3 player is this: Does the EQ button actually do anything? Every time I press it all I get is a quick little fuzzy noise and no appreciable difference in the playback. Other than that, it appears to work fine, but I haven't really put it through its paces, yet.

Yes, it does change the sound bass and treble, doesnt say anything, but it only changes it during playback.

At least on mine it does
Yeah, the EQ does change it, you have to listen carefully to hear what changes it made though. It's not an mp3 player for someone who wants a really nice mp3 player, I mean duh, lol. But it is good for moving files and listening to music if you just want something small to use for a little while. The sound quality was fine for me... also, I had no problems with buttons getting pushed once it was in the little case and hooked to my belt instead of in my pocket (it served the same purpose). Not to mention it adds yet another port to the lappy, and PCTorque offers a huge discount if you don't want it, lol, one beyond what I'd expect it to be... Another reason why I love that place :-)

As stated, though, the 8886 is a beast... the mp3 player in no way reflects on the components inside of the lappy, lol, otherwise, with the work I've put this thing through, it would have crapped out a long time ago. Instead, it's still running as though it was new :-)

I'm liking aviax's signature:
"I have yet to see evidence that beebster is actually a human being. He doesn't appear to ever sleep. I'm convinced he's an AI and this board is just one huge Turing test..."

Who posted that?

The problem is, though, that people don't KNOW that the mp3 player is of bad quality until they buy it. If i were going to buy it (without knowing this site), I would get a 128 to replace my crapped out Rio, only to find out it's crappier than the Rio. Somehow.

Well, if you are someone who really emphasizes the quality of an mp3 player in aspects other than sound quality, then I don't think you'd be getting an internal mp3 player to use anyway, lol. But for me, the one that comes with the 8886 is perfect for my purposes. And, now that there's the option on PCTorque to not get it, that saves people who aren't in my boat some money.

It's basically a $20 MP3 player (take away the memory card) so don't expect much out of it. There aren't many if any $20 MP3 players that accept SD cards.
Exactly... but I think it adds more than an mp3 player to the 8886, because it brings in another memory port. Lol, you could pretty much plug anything into the 8886. It's all about options... I tried to emphasize that aspect in my review, which is how it got so long, lol. :-)

I think it actually takes away from the quality of the 8886v. For example, you wouldn't buy a brand new lexus with a broken glove box.

I like this laptop a lot. I hope I can get my power management eventually fixed however
post #16 of 18
yeah i love my 8886, but it concerns me that such a basic operation (forward/back) on my mp3 player was overlooked/missed during testing.
hmm...It seems as though this piece went through very basic QA. It doesn't look like they took into account various aspects of mp3 so I suspect these buttons may work under a certain set of circumstances (all files must be 128kbit 44khz, cannot exceed a certain length...etc or some other non-trivial configuration) This is just a guess btw.

It's not a bad accessory! I love it! The ones that see it popping out of the laptop love it! And i was scared about battery life, it has been one week since i bought my batteries, and i havent changed them (even though i give it daily use), i havent notices that it didnt fastforwarded/backwarded, the only thing i dislike of it is the fact that when you shut it down, and power it on again, the songs start from the number one...but thats a minor inconvenience.
