XPS Gen 2 or 9300 - Page 3

post #41 of 51
What do you feel the difference in performace will be between a 9200 and 9300? I am leaning toward the 9300 as I like the simple look better than the flashy XPS.

However I would also like it to be a substantial upgrade. I know the XPS is this, but wonder on the 9300. I am not one to upgrade for numbers sake unless the difference is really noticeable.

I will be using the laptop for gaming and DVD mostly. However I don't require the extreme eye candy on the laptop as that is what my desktop is for. High resolution with good frame rates is what I would like.

My 9200 runs most games ok but I would like more FPS.

Thanks

The 9300 will definitely give you more FPS. The vanilla go6800 in the 9300 is about twice as fast as the MR9700 in the 9200.

And the Ultra is twice as fast as the vanilla? This would make the XPS in theory anyway 4x as fast as a 9200?

The difference in configs is about $700 so it's a matter of how much value you place on more than adequate vs ridiculously over the top. Too bad they don't offer the XPS config in a nice sleek 9300 chassis.

Also......no full sized keyboard???? Such a simple thing makes a world of difference

Yeah, that's a good way of putting it.

9200 = adequate
9300 = more than adequate
XPS2 = over the top

Personally, I'm leaning towards keeping my 9200 and using my desktop for the rare case of wanting more FPS. But the XPS2 is pretty tempting. I'll probably at least take delivery of one to check it out and see if it seduces me with those glowing LEDs.

Hmmm.. that seems like a good idea. Of course once I had the XPS in hand I doubt I would send it back. Would be like test driving a Mercedes and buying an Accord. Both good cars but there would be a difference.

The XPS 2 is a sweet gaming machine. I think the I9300 will be great too. It is still a step up from anything else out there and remember that 4 1/2-5 hours of battery life is pretty darn nice. I guess it is a question of which you prefer. I would prefer to have the battery life as well as nice gaming. I am not that great of a gamer so it is pretty much a non-issue. The I9300 will run anything I would throw at for the next 2-3 years at more than acceptable FPS. That is probably because the majority of true gamers on this forum would whoop my ass at most FPS's... I am the guy wandering around that you build your frag totals on for your reference I truly play for fun because I am not the guy winning usually...

you can underclock the gf6800 ultra to the gf6800 clock. this should increase battery life a lot. so i think its better to go with the xps2 because the 9300 cant be overclocked (only one heatpipe 4 gpu, while xps has two heatpipes)

just cancelled my xps2

I wanted it, but I usually upgrade lappies around once a year, and just couldn't justify spending the extra $700 that I probably wouldn't take advantage of. Maybe Ill put it towards the new 24" widescreen monitor. So I'll be quite content with the 9300 listed in sig. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the xps2, but it seems that the 9300 will be here sooner, plus is way cheaper for the config that wil be fine for me.

i see lots of people canceled thir order after the 9300 release
post #50 of 51
I nearly did, they're both still on order. I had actually decided to keep the 9300 and cancel the iXPS, but in actuality, they are coming out to be the same price because of SB discounts (factoring $300 more for the 2.13 processor on the iXPS) and I just like the looks of the XPS better. I really don't like the looks of the 9300. I know that's sort of a lame thing to say being that the looks don't affect the functionality what-so-ever. My only concern with the iXPS is the battery life. 2.25 is acceptable, that's all my Sony gets and I ordered an extra battery, but I have my doubts about being able to extend the battery life by down clocking the cpu.

The XPS2 is stil my frontrunner after the release of the 9300. The 6800 Ultra is the main feature I'm interested in. If I were to care about looks or mobility I would go for the 8104 from acer or the Asus Z71V.

The price difference between the two isn't much, so I'll stick with the XPS2 unless the 9300 manages to get a 6800 Ultra in the next month.
