1GB DDR vs. 512MB DDR2?

Hi,

I'm looking at an inspiron 6000 and can go either way with the RAM. I was hoping to get some opinions.

1GB DDR vs. 512 MB DDR2

If you had the choice between these two, which would you choose if they were priced equally?

And which would you choose if the 512MB DDR2 was $100 more?

Thanks for any help with this decision.

Kindly,
EZ

Get the DDR2 because that is probably all that works with the motherboard/CPU. I'd get 1GB DDR in a second, but I don't believe it would be compatible with your system.

hmmm .... 1GB DDR vs. 512 MB DDR2

Depending on application !
If you are only using the first 512 MB at any time obviously the DDR2 will be a little faster.
If you use more than 512 MB, the 1GB DDR setup will be faster since the 512 MB DDR2 will rely on HDD and other resources.

Thanks to both of you for your comments so far!

The DDR is compatible with the system. It is actually Dell Canada who is offering this deal right now. I guess they're trying to get rid of their DDR stock.

The 512MB DDR2 is actually an additional $100 too.

Knowing this, what would you do?

Thanks again.

Kindly

Hi again

If 512 DDR 2 is $100 more than 1 GB DDR I would go for the 1 GB DDR.

Even better, I would buy 256 DDR 2 and go to newegg.com to buy 1 GB DDR 2 and install it myself

I bet this will be less expensive than getting 1 GB DDR from Dell (Unless Dell has special deals)

Hope this helps !

Thanks!

Anyone else feel like jumping in here for a quick sec? I really would value a few more opinions on this.

Thanks again!

I don't know that inspiron 6000 can use ddr.
I thought it can only use ddr2 ? And ddr is not pin compatible with ddr2, right ?

If it supports 1 Gig DDR, then I would without question go for that over 512 MB of DDR2 - being that I'm a Photoshop nut is the main reason.

That would be great if you could verify that the 6000 really supports DDR RAM. If it supports dual-channel DDR, then it should access memory just as fast as it would for DDR2. I suspect they're just mispelling DDR2 on the site, though.

DDR vs DDR2: Dell Canada is confusing...

Hi,

I bought a I6000 this week from Dell Canada.
When I asked about RAM the sales rep said it was DDR (but he didn't looked sure AT ALL).
The canadian web site talks about DDR SDRAM but the quote I received from Dell says :
"Memory / Mémoire:
1GB, Shared DDR2,400MHz 2 DimmInspiron 6000 (463-8254)"

So, from what I can read in the quote I should get DDR2, right?

Any explanation would be appreciated.
What should I expect?

And most important, when I get my laptop, is there a way to check if they put DDR or DDR2 in my laptop?
Many thanks to you all

I'm quite sure Inspiron 6000 uses Sonoma, which uses DDR2, and no they are not back wards compatible.

Found this:
Supports both DDR & DDR2

Half way down the page:

<snip>

These Centrino Sonoma mobile CPU processor are supported by the Intel 915GM chipset now supports both DDR & DDR2 memory up to DDR2 553 in dual-channel mode for a bandwidth of 8.5GB/sec or 4.2GB/sec in single-channel mode & FSB of 533MHz & 400MHz while the Intel 915GMS only supports 400MHz FSB and DDR2 400 in single channel mode. Both with a max memory capacity of up to 2GB. The 915PM does not have the graphics engine but supports DDR2 533MHz in dual & single channel and 400/500MHz FSB.

Cheers.

I though DDR-II can't fit in DDR-I slots
absolutely a DDR2

First, you'll be sorry to choice 512 MB when there is 1 GB available. The amount of memory is what makes the difference, not really the speed.

The i915 chipset suports both DDR and DDR-II. I would not be suprised if they decided to support regular memory to save a bit.
