5690 and Hyperthreading

I just got my 5660 back from Sager after having it upgraded to 5690 spec.I have a 2.8g proc and it seem to be running well. But Hyperthreading doesn't seem to be to be available. When checking the cpu in WCPUID it reports that the processor is HT capable. The bios HT option is not available. How can I tell if I have the mobo in, and why the HT is not available?

If the hyperthreading option is not available, then you either need a bios upgrade or you have the wrong motherboard...or the wrong processor....

What is the FSB reporting as? 400 or 800?

It's possible for windows to guess wrong on installing HT support, but the BIOS shoudld have it as an option. Using something like Everest Home Ed, what is the motherboard identified as?

Is this the CPU that you had in your 5660 or did you have sager put I new one in?

If its is the one you had in your 5660 then more then likely its the 2.8Ghz p4 w/ 533 FSB and Intel started HT on the 3.06 GHz and the only 2.8 that has HT is the Prescott P4. but if you really want HT you can get Northwood or prescott CPUs real cheep off newegg.com just make sure you get the 478 pin P4 and NOT the LGA 775.

Just keeping mind if you buy a Prescott it will run a little hotter. Because the Prescott 478 pin CPUs did have a little of a heating issue so get some Artic silver 5 or 3 (preferably AS5)

Will the 9860 with P4 ET64bitT also be HT?

took a second look and a processor is NOT part of the upgrade. bottom case, motherboard, heatsink, fan...no cpu mentioned.

The BIOS must have an autodetect routing, and not show HT as an option if not available on the CPU (I thought perhaps it would be grayed out, but the best check is to contact Sager).

So, old CPU didn't have HT.

Apparently there are two 2.8g 533mhz FSB P4 processors , one that is HT capable, and one that is not. I must have the latter.

I am 100% sure that your CPU does not have HT because with the 56xx series of laptops they did not start to offer HT tell the 3.06GHz CPU and it was more on the 5670 then the 5660 and at the time of the 5660 through the 5670 the only CPU out at the time that had HT was the 3.06 so i hate to be the bringer of bad news but your CPU does not have HT.

While I agree his does not have HT, mainly because they removed the CPU from the old system and put it in this one (which is what they quoted you for), your info is wrong.

I have a 2.6ghtz P4 with 800 fsb with HT in a 5680.

I believe your speaking of the other poster (GoodRiddance), who is wrong about the P4's.

There are two 2.8g P4's one is HT capable and one is not.

yes, i was referring to him

What I was trying to say is that the 2.8 GHz w/ HT was not even in existence when the 5660 was the new laptop. That CPU came out about a year and 1/2 later and here is what I found is the only 2.8 GHz w/ HT

2.8 533 Northwood w/o HT 478pin

2.8 533FSB Prescott w/ HT 478pin

2.8 800FSB Northwood w/HT 478pin

2.8 800fsb Prescott w/ HT LGA775

OK, Bro now it make sense, I thought you were saying that there was no HT capabale 2.8g proc. Now what about Henrik, He was playing with HT on his 5660 with the bios he wrote?
did you reinstall the os after the upgrade

HT has it be enabled prior to installing windows

if it is not, windows will not see the HT option, untill a reinstall

But HT is not available in BIOS, if you dont see it in BIOS, then the chip must not support it. But yes, I did do a fresh install after the upgrade.

woo hoo! I make sense for once!

I deserve theses

Also with the 5660 sager did release bios that enabled HT

But you have to have a CPU that is capable of HT.

So in conclusion HT has been on the 56xx series from the 5660-5690 but you must have a CPU that has HT on it. and if its not in bios your cpu does not have HT.

I don't think Clevo ever released a BIOS for the 5660 w/ HT enabled. I know Henrik did. The first offically HT 56XX was the 5670.

Yeah that might have been the bios I was thinking of. I just knew there was one out there that enabled HT for the 5660. But we both have 5690s and all their creamy goodness
