Sony A series s-l-o-w CD reading

I've had two Sony A series computers (both A 190s) and they have both been very slow when importing CDs into iTunes and other music programs. They do it at a max of 8x, as opposed to 15x for my old Asus and 18 or so for a Sony GRT I used to have.

So I did a check with Nero CD speed (http://www.cdspeed2000.com/) and it confirmed a maximum read speed of 8x on a 45 minute audio CD. This compares to a maximum of 40x with my external CD.

This is nowhere near what a (supposed) 24x CD should do.

It writes just fine, in fact twice as fast as it reads, which shouldn't happen either.

Can anyone else confirm slow CD reading with their A series, or suggest a fix? I have DMA enabled.

Cheers

Which CD/DVD drive do you have installed? I have the Sony DW-D56A on my Sony A270 notebook, and the drive starts at 10X and end up near 22X on a 60 minute audio CD.

After a bit more research, I've discovered it is probably not a fault with the drives, but a 'feature' of that particular model. They seem to have a very low DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) rate. I did the test again with a data CD and got over 20x reading.
