I am sure most you out there are aware of the virus "the worm". Suppossedly this virus attaches itself upon logging into the internet. I am just wondering, since I just pur*****d a new Sager NP8890, with Windows Xp, will the manufacture take care of this problem or do we (I) must fix it? If so, please provide the web site where we (I) caan download the fix.

the worm is dealt with the windows update programs. that is if you download the fix before u get the virus

tbear,
just use winXPs auto update system and download the patch. the only reason so many people were infected with this worm was because they didnt update when microsoft discovered the problem back in april. and as far as the worm 'attaching' when you log on the internet...thats a bit uneducated.
you must download a virus via email or some other source and run it for your computer to be infected. as long as you stay up to date with current patch releases and are careful about what you open, you should have no problem. but just in case you are still overly worried you can go to:
http://www.symantec.com
or
http://www.mcafee.com
for tools and instructions on how to detect and remove virii/worms.

Edit: just to be a little more clear... 'most' virii you have to download and run. the blaster worm actually pings random ips in sequential order checking the systems on those ip strings for the potential weakness. upon finding a system that is not updated it will duplicate itself on that machine and the rest you know. just update and youll be fine!

Hi ry

How do you download the fix first when you first have to install the operating systems? Then your ISP? Afterwards, log in to make sure internet is working (not necessarly in this order). At this the virus will attached itself. All in all, I would have to fix. Did you buy a sager with xp? did you ghet the virus? are you recommanding step you took?

Tks Emry

Thanks Emry. But this is not uneducated. The virus attached itself to my niece computer once she logged on the the internet. She did not open any emails.

All in all, your web site is very helpful.

I am not that worried. I just want to stayed informed as to what my possiblity are just in case.

its not as straight forward as that. just because you log onto the internet doesnt mean you will be automatically infected. install winxp, get your isp up and running then use the XP auto updater. it will download all the current patches for you and install them. when its done with that a fresh reboot and your kosher.

Heres where you can download the patch for winxp 32 bit edition:

I would STRONGLY recommend that you get a disk, download the update from Microsoft on a clean computer (one that was already patched), put the update on that disk, and use that disk to patch your new computer before you connect it to the Internet for the first time. Once you patched the big one with the disk, you can go online and install the rest of the updates from Windows Update.

A modem/ethernet cable should not come within 10 feet of any unpatched computer, in my opinion. I don't like gambling with my computer's security.

Or, if the virus tries to shutdown your computer (this is what MSBlaster did) while you're downloading the patch, you can abort the shutdown. Start->run->type "shutdown -a" without the quotes->continue to download the patch.

why did the board censor the "chase" in "purchased"?

It might also pay you to grab a (free) copy of Zonealarm even before applying the patch. If you have another computer you can upload the Zonealarm zip file onto that, copy it across to your Sager, install there and then do the Microsoft update.

With Zonealarm running your system is effectively invisible to others on the Internet (all non-essential ports are closed). You can then do the Microsoft update without being concerned about being infected.

Zonealarm is sort of the Sager of firewalls IMHO.

Heck, when I recieve my laptop today, I'll be updating behind my linux firewall, with port 135 carefully blocked. But just to let you know, the firewall included with WinXP is probably sufficient...

Thank you all. You have been very supportive. I have great input. All this information will help me to ensure all goes well when setting up my new sager laptop 8890. I still have about one week and a half before I recieve my shipping confirmation.
