Harddrive upgrade question. (dark brown plastic film)

Thread Starter
Hey all, I installed the 7200 Hitachi HD in the computer. My question is:
There's this brown film covering the circuitry side on the original drive. I removed it and placed it on the new one since the new one didn't come with one. Was this the right thing to do? What is the tape for? Will it screw with air flow?
Thanks.

I couldn't guarantee you this, but I would guess it's like the protective film that comes on new home electronics equipment (like on the face of the unit, that you peel off). It's probably for protection while being packed in the factory and all that noise. And I don't believe there is any airflow from inside to outside from a hard drive, perhaps along it, but the tape would have no effect on air flow. Hope this idea puts your mind at ease

It is a good idea to replace the film that you found in your laptop. Take care to replace it exactly as you found it, it is probably anti-static insulation. It is probably not required, but is just a little extra protection for the HD.

The biggest thing to worry about is not covering the little hole in you new HD that is usally marked "DO NOT COVER." Every hard drive has this hole (it is very small, a little less that 1mm). You are correct, it is for air flow from inside to outside of the HD, and it is very important.
