Looking for an ultra-portable, considering the dell 700m.

Specs desired:
1.8ghz processor
512+ ram
60+ hdd, 5400rpm
less than 13" lcd
at least 5 hrs batt life
prefer bluetooth but must have wifi

and last but not least, under 1300 US dollars.

anything out there with those requirements?

aye, I agree the 700m meets the requirements I need, that is why it is the only lappy I am currently looking at. Was curious though if I may have missed another that would be a better fit for me. I have never been a fan of the Dell corporation, even though I sit here and type this reply on my old dell desktop.

Check out the Sharp Actius series... especially the MMs.

Any opinions on the chip speed for the Dothans? The 700m comes with the 2.0 or 1.8 or 1.6. Is the 2.0 worth the extra $150 or so bucks over a 1.8?

Well thats a good question...if you don't plan on doing major sh*t....like opening 30 operations at the same time then I guess the .2 difference doesn't make much of a difference. But if you plan on doing a little gaming or editing of any sort then the processor would make a big difference...

DO NOT get the 2.0 its not worth the money, since you have integrated graphics, the GPU will be the bottle neck, even surfing websites the computer will hang and lag since the graphics card sucks so bad. i doubt you will even get over the 600MHz speed by regular sufing since the video will lag everything else down. if you plan to encode mp3s and video and such, it still wont be that big of a difference, for $150 you can get a BUNCH of other things that will be more useful.

I doubt the 700m will give you 5+ hours battery life with the standard battery...

LOL No it won't! What do you think everyone used to surf the web before all these fancy graphics cards came out? The old graphics cards were far worse than new integrated graphics.

Well, it would likely be rarely used for gaming besides the occasional WoW on the go or some older games like Civ3. A mid weight machine would be ok I suppose but I think I'd rather have the ultra mobile smaller notebook. 98% of my gaming will be with a desktop machine anyway. I want something for travel/work etc. to check email, surf, etc. with just enough oomph to run a game or two and play dvds/videos/music.

I'm vascillating on the 1.8-2.0 thing because for the extra cash I save with the 1.8 I can get an extra battery and 1GB of ram.

i have a brand new dell at work with intel extreme graphics, it is HORRIBLE!!! even the Geforce4MX IGP in my sisters shuttle is faster, im just saying intel extreme graphics just sucks, the IGPs like radeon 9200 and geforce go 5200 aren't bad, they should be made the bare minimum, you can actually play UT2K4 on a radeon 9200 with the options turned down, you CANNOT play UT on the intel IGP

i would get the extra ram, you'll need it!, with 1GB you can turn off your swap and not thrash your disk to hell. the more your HDD is accessed the shorter the life is and the hotter it gets. so when you get it turn off system restore, indexing and swap (assuming you get 1gB)

Yah know, the sony S series is close too, well 13.3" screen. Whatever, you might wanna look at it though as it does come with a 9700 video card and so if you played any games it could actually manage them. I drooled over that laptop for quite some time before deciding to hold off and re-evaluate my criteria.

Tellerve

EDIT: ahem, sorry, didn't read the under 1300, so the sony is way out

The S series is very nice, but doesn't come close to the 1300 dollar requirement. That is probably the most important feature I am currently looking for. I am using this lappy for mainly web surfing, plus a few regular jobs with excel and word. No gaming, unless it would be very non-intensive apps. I have a desktop for the gaming, and see no need to play the games away from the house, as I prefer to be a homebody anyway.
