Alien Nightmare

Well I thought I would let anyone considering purchasing an alienware 7700 in on my experience thus far with the company. It has been over 3 months now with nothing to show for the 3500+ I layed down for a new laptop. I made the purchase in december knowing full well that it was a pre-order and would not be receiving it untill mid January. Well it came late January after delays (this would be a common thread throughout my experience) and arrived to my great dissapointment. Right out of the box I noticed a crack in the touch pad, this was a bit dissapointing but I was riding the high of getting my new laptop. Now the second thing I noticed was that my microphone did not work on the computer when I tried to call a friend on skype to tell him about my new 'badass' machine... no big deal I don't really use my computer to talk much anyway. Ok, so now for the real reason I bought the 7700, gaming. I fired up doom three and played for about 30 minutes before the entire system lost power. I rebooted, played for another 10 minutes thinking it was just a fluke but then I lost power again. After working with Alienware they were to send me a new fan for the graphics card as they believed this was causing my computer to over heat and shut down. I asked how long a new fan being shipped would be and was told 3-5 days. Well 3 weeeks later I recieved the fan.... which didn't work. Awesome. So now they need me to send the comp back to them... at this point I'm super bumped. But hey, I know parts fail and on the plus side they can fix my touch pad and mic. Well one week turned into two and then three and the last time I talked to alienware they said they didn't have any motherboards (which I guess was the problem) and they don't know when they'll be getting any. Awesome!

So at this point I'm pretty bummed, and after talking to some co-workers they convince me that it's proabably a good idea to just get my money back.... this is where it get's really awesome!!! Sorry sir your computer is way past it's 30 day return date. Ok, so you're telling me that b/c you sent me a defective product and then made me sit on it while you sent me a part that didn't fix the problem, and then had me send it back to you and wait some more... that's my problem and should have returned it earlier. Oh and not to mention if I could have returned it, there would be a 15% retocking fee, Awesome!

So now I still don't have a computer, I've borrowed one from a friend to use for work. How funny is that, I'm a computer programmer.. working with computers for a living and I'm borrowing one. So what do I do now? I'm so choked about the whole thing that I'm ready to dispute the charges on my credit card and go buy a sager or dell or anything!

Anyway, maybe this sounds like a big flame but I think you guys can appreciate how hard it is to be patient waiting for your alien to come.... and then to be dissapointed royaly....

I had quite a few problems when i got my new aw, maybe not quite as much as yours but enough to be quite annoying. I'd just stick it out if you can as alienware will *eventually* get it right, that you can be sure of. You just might have to wait. Depends on wether you value that 15% or your time more..

Cheers!

Well I appreciate it. I've been trolling this forum for a while. Listening to all the reviews, which is why I ultimately went for the 7700. Price wasn't really an issue, I just wanted the most bad ass machine out there. The thing that really sucks though is that I've got a 3 month old machine that I've never used, and I usually upgrade every year.... just feels like I'm getting burnt.

It's a little internal one under the monitor. nice to use for voice over IP. Congrats on your ride, I was crossing my finger that mine would come without any defects... but it wasn't to be. I just want to GAME!

Unfortunately I value my time more.... Probably has cost me money more then once.

Sorry to hear that. You probably don't want to hear this, but my computer and experience is exceptional with AW. I have no buyer's remorse(which is rare for me). Sorry to hear about that.

ya man it sucks you got a lemon... i read some nightmare stories about alienware... but there were far more greater people greatly satisfied with their machines... thats why i went with a 7700... good luck with your rig though man

Well you don't get to see a company's true colors untill something goes wrong and they have to support their product. I know they don't make the parts but they say the burn them in which is hard to believe that this would happen in the first place. Wouldn't someone see a cracked touch pad in the burn in process? I just wish alienware would take responsiblity for their product, they should give me refund minus the restocking fee... and maybe a fruit basket for my time... or at least give me a promise as too when I'll get my machine back and hold to it

Are you sure the crack didn't happen during shipping??

enterence, Welcome to the forum!

I didn't see any flames at all. You actually explaned that very well considering its not the best position to be in. I sent a message to an Alienware Support tech that frequents these forums (Alienware-Steve). He will most likely contact you for more information. Keep us updated how this all works out for you. asking for a fruit basket doesnt sound so bad. now, if you had asked for a roll of duct tape, then I would be a little more concerned.

lol, duct tape.... hmmmm, I should upgrade my request. To answer the above, no I'm not sure the crack didn't happen in shipping... could very well have happened. That's why it didn't even warrant a call to customer care, it was something I could have lived with. Broken motherboard....... not so much.

Well, i have just had an issue with alienware as well.

I don't have the best paitence, and when it comes to waiting for computer parts i get really angry on the phone.

OK, so i made the order for my 7700 on a friday, the guy said it would arrive in 14 days.

So, i call up on monday and i get a different story.

" It takes us 14 days maximum to put your computer together, then approx another 3 days for delivery. "

At that point i had wet my pants with anger, and i offered them $100 to get it to me within 1 week.

No way, they had 250 orders and they are not going to accept $100 pure profit to sent an order of $7,500$ earlier.

Btw, i am ordering from NZ so the order will be taken to austrailia...

Ok, so it looks like it will be arriving this week some time. If it doesn't i will be taking my money some where else, where i get a good service.

Also;

I ordered the laptop, i got no confirmation. No telephone call, no email confirming my order. I then telephoned Alienware in austrailia, i pressed 3 for sales and i got redirected to samsung austrailia?!

OK, i try the next day and i get a fairly nice sales person.

Ok, then i am waiting for ever and ever and i get no status reports of my order?

So i ring up and ask whats happening.

" oh our order status system won't be in place for another 6 months "

Farken awesome.

So, here i am waiting for this package(s) to come worth 7,500$

For 7,500$ i would expect better support and service and reassurance that my order is going well.

I keep telling my mates that this badass comp is coming, but now they think i am a lying twat.

I don't like alienware anymore!

I hope you both get these issues worked out..your friends will believe it when they see it and you will have a change of heart..have some patience which is hard, I waited 6 weeks but I am very glad I did and you will feel the same way..waiting sucks though, I admit

Honestly if I didn't know any better I would say that alienware has gotten way over their heads in orders and repairs. Their marketing department is writing checks that the assembly line can't cash. The worst is having to explain your situation over and over each time they tell you to call back, and each time you get a different story about what's happening or what the hold up is.
