Precision M70

I want a system similar in specs to the 9300, but a 17" screen is too big for me to be carrying around a college campus. The precision M70 seems to be similar in spec, but it costs a whole hell of a lot more because it doesn't seem to have any coupons associated with it.

Do coupons come out for this system? Are there issues with the precision I should know about?

Coupons come out rarely for these... it's their top of the line... they assume you are using the laptop professionally... and therefore... you have $$$$. Just my opinion on why coupons don't come out often for their business line and even less so for the Precision line. But.. they do come out occasionally.

The good news is that the M70 is smaller and so it can fit in some computer slotted backpacks (I use a Targus Rakgear for mine). Maybe they have some now for 17" notebooks though... can't say.

Well after looking at a 17" laptop in real life, I'm astounded by it's bulkiness. It's come down to a choice between the M70 and the Acer Travelmate 8100. I'd rather get the M70 because my school has an on-site Dell repair location, but the M70 configured as I'd like it comes to 3000$ without any coupons compared to the Acer's 2200$.

The M70 isn't cheap... also, even though it has better dimensions, this laptop is thick.. maybe not as think as a Sager behemoth... but still it's pretty thick. For me, at least it fits in my backpack. And yes... I spent the $3000, but I got a 2005fpw monitor and a port replicator for free... so not too terribly bad.

Well that makes my decision very hard. I'm going to be taking this laptop to college, which has a Dell repair shop on campus, so I want to get a Dell. However, 17" is too big, yet I want a good video card.

My two choices right now seem to be Acer's Travelmate 8100 and Dell's M70. Between these two there is an 800$ price difference with a very little performance difference (at least when there are no coupons available). In college the laptop will be critical because it is the only PC I'll have, so if it breaks I'll need to make treks to the library to do all my work. If the Acer breaks, I'll have to send it in and wait for a couple of weeks. If the Dell breaks, I walk over to the Dell repair station and get it back in a day or so. Assuming no coupons pop up for the Precision (if one does I'm going for the precision without question), how much of a risk would it be to assume my laptop doesn't get damaged at all during 4 years of college. To me it seems fairly likely that something will happen to it.

Here are the numbers:Soooo a 17 in is thinner and 1 inch longer in deph and 1.3 inches in width

I went to the Dell Kiosk this weekend to see the size of the 17" 9300, since I had ordered the XPS Gen 2 and was wondering if it was to big to carry around. Really not that much bigger and about a pound heavier. Think I will go with the XPS, although I wanted the M70, but is it not sold through the Army Air Force Exchange where I bought my XPS. I would prefer a 15 inch XPS, but I norally keep the laptop at the house except when I travel which is about once a month.

M70
Dimensions 1.67" height x 14.2" width x 10.3" depth 6.69 lbs1

9300

Dimensions 1.6-inches height x 15.5 width x 11.3 Depth 7.85 lbs
