Small Business discount vs Student Discount

Thread Starter
Well after hearing about the small business discount, the 35% off one, I wanted to see which would be cheaper between that and my student discount. The small business 9300 came out to 2025.40, including 1 gig RAM, 1.86 ghz processor, 3 year warranty, deluxe screen, backpack, Norton Antivirus, CD burner option, internal wireless and stuff. The one with my University discount came out to 2024.35, with the 20% off in addition to 12% off. Thing is that this one gives me a $100.00 mail in rebate, so it came out cheaper than the small business solution. Has anyone else seen this? Just a heads up.

SB gives you 130 back in rebate!

I just don't understand why people configure systems with so much RAM. It's almost ALWAYS cheaper to buy the RAM from somewhere BESIDES Dell. Case in point: I picked up a 256mb SoDimm from Office Depot for $19 after rebate. Dell wants $50 + shipping for them.

You can literally save a hundred or more by buying the RAM yourself from Crucial, NewEgg, ZZF, etc.

That's not true in the case of the 9300 deal. Dell charges $250 for 1GB, but there's a 35% discount, making it $162.50. Try to find 2x512 PC4200 DDR2 SoDIMMs for $162.50 someplace else.

I've run into issues with RAM and having it covered under the computers manufacturer warranty is better for troubleshooting and replacement.
The first thing tech support will have you do is put back in your original RAM for troubleshooting problems. If the problem is the RAM then you have to deal with 3rd party RMA and rarely do they cross ship.
I would not pay Dell's rediculous amount for RAM if they did not give discounting to offset the price.

Dunno what YOU'RE looking at, but I just checked the Dell website:

DELL - 512 MB Memory Module for Dell Inspiron 9300 System $161.96 in Dell Home, $179.95 in Dell SB (for a SINGLE 512mb chip)

DELL - 1 GB Memory Module for Dell Inspiron 9300 System $287.96 in Dell Home, $319.95 in Dell SB.

Are you talking about configuring it WITH the system? (I think you are.) The upgrade to 1gb is $160 currently, which IS a decent price. But I have seen it for less when it's on sale. Not an "everyday" price, but one that's after rebate.

I have never seen PC4200 DDR2 SoDIMMs on sale for a cheaper price than $160 for 1GB. This is not the type of RAM you can get at BestBuy with rebates. If somebody was buying the 9300 from the SMB with the 35% coupon, as the OP was, it would be foolish to configure the system with less than 1GB.

Also, by purchasing the RAM from Dell you are supporting the company and making it possible for them to invest in R&D. If Dell does well then we see iXPS-Gen3 then iXPS-Gen4, etc...

I do not think they should rape us on the prices though. If they did not offset their list prices with discounting I would label them as thieves when looking at the 2Gig upgrades.

Yes, if somebody bought *anything* from Dell at list price, I would label Dell as thieves, but you probably don't want to hear what I would label the buyer in that case
