What is a GeForce FX Go5650 ?

This chip is appearing in the new Dell laptop, but I have never heard of it. It is not even on NVidia's site.

I can't see any reviews of it anywhere. Obviously, it is some sort of FX 5600 Go, but how does it differ from those shipped in Toshiba and Sony Laptops (which are just plain 5600s).

A wannabe 5600 ;-)

video card

The 5650 is a slightly overclocked 5600. I guess this is NVidia's way of putting out something similar to the M10 Pro. It does indeed exist and has a slightly higher clock speed than the 5600.

According to Dell, the 5650 has 4X AGP bus speed, whereas the 5600 and ATI's 9600 are 8X.

It is not the graphics chip that is 4x AGP, it is the 855 chipset. It only supports 4x AGP. The Springdale and the SIS 648FX support 8X AGP but there are no games that actually utilize 8X AGP. It has been around for about at least a year and no games or apps. support 8X AGP. So does it really matter? If nothing utilizes the technology, then what is the use of having it? It's like HT, it has been around for years but there are maybe like 3 apps. that utilize it; pure marketing hype and bull. You will most likely never use HT as the app. itself must have it utilized for it and there are few apps that utilize it. One more marketing hype that is worthless. It is great to say that "wow my laptop supports AGP 8X and HT" but if nothing uses it, it is just a waste and nothing more than eye-candy.

FWIW the AGP 4x bus isn't even fully utilized.

I didn't claim that the 5650 only supported 4X, I simply repeated what's listed in Dell's own pop-up chart. That chart doesn't attribute the 4X to the 855 chipset. It lists the 5650 as supporting 4X. Maybe you ought to fire off an e-mail to Dell and let them know about their error.

supposed to be a 50mhz overclock on the regular 5600

also a slightly different architecture featuring (shorter connections?) which allows the overclock and reduces battery consumption

the new 8600 hit 10k+ on 3dmark2001 (supposed to be +700 from the 5200...although many speculate if there's that much of a gain over the 4200go)

I read all this and saw pictures of the bench over at dellforums

I've seen some D800's pulling close to 10K in 3DMark01 with a 64MB 4200go....

The only benefit I can see with the 5650 is the additional 64MB for textures and DX9 hardware support.
