Besides the DELL being a 12.1" and the Sony a 13.3", how are they different ? I played with the sony at Best Buy..felt kind of small. Does the DELL feel bigger then this...Any advice ?

The Sony S is slimmer and has a much nicer keyboard and pad, but it costs 25 - 33% more here where I am (China). The Sony was sexier, and having discrete VGA should be faster. The 700m feels too thick and chunky compared to the Sony.
But the deal breaker for me was I wanted extended international warranty so I finally went Dell 700m.

the 700m is an amazing laptop. I work at best buy and have compared it to everything that we stock. I got my 700m for less than $1300 including tax, and a 1gb stick of ram I put in. This thing is addicting. I didn't even have much reason for needing one, but I find myself sitting on the couching surfing and watching tv instead of sitting at my computer desk like I used to do. You can't get a thin and light laptop equipped close to the 700m for less than $1000 more than dell. This IS the best bargain in this section of laptops as far as I've found in my research, and I am very happy with it.

The 700m is the inferior laptop. I have seen and worked with both.
Sony's battery life is better with standard battery, screen is better as dell's is merely like putting a nushield over it, whereas the sony's seem to have two backlights in place. The sony has discrete graphics. The sony arguably looks better. Most importantly, the keyboard is quite a bit better. That is my main fault with the 700m. Just too small, specifically, the period and question mark and comma keys. I'm a touch typist and you usually accommodate to it, but I don't have confidence in it, always subconsciously figuring out where certain keys are. Just like an old inspiron whose backspace was the same size as a regular letter key. I swore never to do that again. It's these little things that unless you do heavy duty research or see it live AND play with it for a while, many people don't realize, or at least I didn't.
Other than these quibbles, the 700m is a good laptop. Mainly the keyboard for me. If it weren't for the keyboard, I'd be in business with this laptop.

Everyone is going to have their own opinion. I have worked on just about every laptop out there be it new or old. The battery life is much better on the sonys, but its not worth paying $1000 more for the same or less performance just for longer battery life in my book. 5 hours (possibly more once undervloted) is long enough for what I need. The keyboard is an individual like/dislike. I personally love the keyboard and its integrated features. I have fairly large hands and I have no trouble typing on this thing. The screen on the two laptops is similar other than the obvious size difference. Even though the sony has a "better" video setup it performed worse than the 700m in benchmarks on cnet. You can't touch the 700m for its price, and thats the bottom line. Its not the best out there by a long shot, but you can't get close to it for even $500 more.

Hi guys. New person at notebookforums.com. I love my 700m. I can't compare it the Sony that is being mentioned because I've never used that one. And yes, don't pay more than $1,000 for the 700m from Dell. Wait for a $750 off $1500 coupon to come out. Check deal websites on the web, as they will know about them before anyone else. I don't know if the rules of this forum allow me to post the site I go to where I get my deals. I got a 700m with Pentium M 1.6GHz Processor, 256mb ram (added a 1gb stick I bought cheaper elsewhere), 80gb hardrive, and 8cell extended life battery for $755 shipped. After the ram I ordered separately I spent a total of $875. Pretty good deal IMHO.

its size
Do you guys use this lap top as your main computer? another words do you spend more than 3 hours a day on it? I just feel that the small screen and lack of sapce to have multiple windows open will get annoying. I have always used a 15" or 17" monitor and really like the idea of haveing a small lap top but feel that I will only get annoyed by the size of the screen/key board. it will be my main computer for about 3 years while i am at school. What do u guys think does the size get annoying after a while? any of you wish you had a slightly bigger screen?Eugene

i use my 700m everyday and don't even bother touching my SONY VAIO desktop anymore (havent turned it on for a week)...
the 700m screen is great and the size doesn't get annoying, ever!...Rather, i find the 700m quite convenient because of its size, portability, and battery life and not the mention its price, which is considerably less than a S series SONY VAIO.
I have my old fujitsu 15" lifebook lying around and that thing is HUGE compared to my 700m...and im glad i bought the 700m to replace it, i would never think of going back to a 15" laptop screen, ever.
the keyboard is different than your ordinary keyboard, but it just gets some getting used to and now i dont even notice a difference. I type on it almost everyday while taking notes for lecture, internet surfing, and emailing. I have no problems whatsoever with the keyboard and if that is whats holding you back from purchasing a 700m, then your really missing out!
