Probably won't get what it's worth, especially since the i8600 is discontinued. People will look at it, say "I can get the same or better new from Dell" and offer you less than you want.

I'd say no more than $900 or so at best, though I'd guess it's worth to be closer to $1200.

$900? Are you ****ing crazy?

I'd sell it for $1000 straight. I've got a very similar setup excpet a 1.6GHz.

Now all you gotta do is FIND someone to pay that price. Maybe you should re-read what I wrote; I said it's worth around $1200, but I doubt anyone will pay that since you can get similiar (or in some cases, more powerful) systems for less new.

Used computers aren't like used cars - they don't hold value.

Actually I would put it up on EBAY for $1 with no reserve. Then let the bidding wars begin. If you put a high starting price or reserve it may scare people away. But put it up there for a buck and people will likley take notice and start bidding like crazy. That is exactly how I plan to sell the i8600 in my signature.

so if my friend puts it on eBay, there's a chance it'll go above $1000, or not even make it to $900??? best way is just find someone i know to sell it to?

Like others have said, its a machine that is no longer sold and a better chipset is now out (6000).

You may be lucky to get $750 -1000, but difinetly not over $1000

With Ebay you never know. I have sold stuff for much more than I thought I would get - but I typically start the bidding at $1 and have no reserve. I believe this is the best way to get people excited and start a bidding war. But certainly there is a chance you might get much less than $1000 . . . but there is also a chance you may get over $1000. That is the beauty of Ebay.

You should be able to get a pretty good idea by seraching Ebay for recent finished auctions on the i8600.

yea, but most of them have faster processors with 32 or 64mb video cards. to one who doesn't game, 1.5GHz with 128mb video card is not as good as 2.0GHz with 32mb video, is this correct. or the other way around, for one who does game, 1.5GHz with 128mb video card would be a better machine than 2.0GHz with 32mb video card?

The graphics card is more important here than the processor for gaming.

I think you would do better on EBAY - much more exposure. In any event let us know how much you wind up selling it for - I will be selling mine shortly.

Just for an example, I have an i8500. I went to the Dell Outlet and found the closest one to my config: Inspiron 8500 (System Identifier EP905TW4), and Dell wants $1,495 for it?

Mine has WUXGA, a 60gb HDD (Hitachi 7K60), and a TM1450 card - so that should add another $200, right?

Here's another one: Inspiron 8500 (System Identifier 0GE488M7), and Dell wants $1,714!

Well, it's got a 2.4GHz (mine is 2.2GHz), but it only has WSXGA+ and a 32mb video (again, I have WUXGA and the 64MB nVidia GeForce4, 4200Go Video Card), and it's 40gb/5400rpm HDD is less than my 60gb/7200rpm.

So shouldn't I be able to sell my i8500 for at least $1,300?

Of course not.

While I'm not selling it (though if someone wants to pay me $1,200 for it, I will!), the point I'm trying to make is that you can't get what a laptop is *worth* since for the same (or in some cases, LESS) price, you can get a NEW laptop with MORE power (CPU, HDD, RAM, etc.) Unless someone REALLY wants your model (be it the i8500 as in my case, or the i8600 in yours, or whatever it is you're selling), I think the rule of thumb is that a laptop will sell for MAX ¾ of it's actual value, and usually, about ½.

Best of luck to you, though.

Here is your problem. The people who browse these forums and the people who would purchase a laptop computer off Ebay are tech-savy informed consumers. They comparison shop and hunt for deals to get the best price.

If you want to get top dollar for your i8600 you need to advertise to the people who walk into Best Buy or Circuit city and spend $2000+ on a lappy with integrated graphics and think they got a good deal. You find one of these people and they will give you top dollar for your i8600 in a heartbeat and brag to their friends that they ripped you off.

Example: I bought Best Buys's $500 laptop special on the day after Thanksgiving. Sold it same day (new in box) for $775 to a local PC vendor. He turned around and sold it for ~$900 which was still cheaper than it was listed for on the Toshiba website so everybody went home happy. Best Buy even threw in a $50 gift card for spending over $500 and I got reward zone points from the purchase too!

Example 2: A friend of mine bought a Sony Vaio from Circuit city. He was thrilled to get it for under $2k. I showed him my (more powerful) i8600 and told him I spent under $1000 ($750 off coupon) and he about choked. I think he will be talking to me before he buys another computer.

Good luck,

Martian
