Alright guys, Im extremely pissed right now, i have a dead pixel like almost in the middle of my screen and I notice it everytime, I called alienware support and they told me that there was a 6 dead pixel minumum to have it replaced for free. This is BULL SH*T. I paying $3400 for this notebook and i have a dead pixel. I called the support and the guy that i was talking to didnt say a word when i was B*tching them out. What causes a Dead pixel anyways? Well alienware technical support can kiss my ass! AHHHHH! IM SOOO PISSED!

6 pix?

Thats just wrong, especially when you pay that much money.

AW's dead pixel policy for mobile systems is listed in their Knowledge Base on the support website, you should check that out do see if you qualify. It shouldn't be 6 dead pixels, it should be 2 or more, and if its in the middle of the screen it should be automatic replacement. Check out that knowledge base article though, and maybe call again. Maybe the CS Rep you got made a mistake.

He must have a 7700. AW's policy for that laptop is different than the rest. Here is what their policy is (from their knowledgebase):

4-d. Alienware will replace the 7700 Mobile Desktop Computer LCD screen if:

* There are more than 6 defect bright spots on the whole screen area.
* There are more than 6 defect dark spots on the whole screen area.
* There are more than 3 double bright spots on the whole screen area.
* There are more than 3 double dark spots on the whole screen area.
* There are more than 7 total bright and dark spots on the whole screen area.
* There is more than 1 triple bright spot (or triple dark spot) on the whole screen area.
* There is 1 bright or dark spot in the center of the screen.

The policy for the 7700 is different than all the other Alienware notebooks.

I just tested it out and the dead pixel is just over to the left of the center by a hair! Do you think they would still take it, i mean its soooo close to the center its not even funny how close it is. Its driving me insane. Its a real privilage to have this computer in my hands right now and then to see this happen to it. Its devistating! I cannot, not, look at it, I mean its right there in my face.

What should I do? I feel like punching the F*cking thing!

yeah, i didn't even think that the 7700 had a different policy. it says right in the article

The thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) for notebook computers contains in the region of 2 million TFT’s. A small number of missing, discolored, or always-lit dots or pixels are characteristic of TFT LCD technology due to the manufacturing process for such technology irrespective of manufacturer. The standard of production techniques today cannot guarantee an absolutely fault-free screen display. The manufacturing processes for LCD’s almost invariably results in a small number of the pixels on LCD screens to be defective. A few isolated constant lit or unlit pixels may be present. This phenomenon is not confined to Alienware systems but is common throughout the industry and there is a standard acceptance criterion for the number of dead pixels allowed.

that sucks though, sorry about your screen man. how's your laptop working for you other than that?

I love the laptop, i love it to death i have Logitech 5300e speakers hooked up, loude as hell, performs like a dream, im just having problems with the dead pixel, my mic wont work durring teamspeak, and i Punkbuster wont update when i play on my server in Call of Duty. other than that, its a dream come true, i wanted this computer so bad, and now that i have a dead pixel im having second thoughts about this computer. A+ Technical Support my ass!

Have you tried the eraser procedure? Astu says that if you take an eraser and very very gently and carefully rub on the dead pixel it sometimes fixes it. I would be really careful doing it though.

Should i even try it? What would happen to the screen if i F*ck it up?
I know how you feel... I had one dead pixel on my 7700 on the left side (I was afraid to look for others).

It doesn't make much sense buying a brand new quality product and finding dead pixels.

It's really hard to believe there's an acceptable standard.

Sony has the same info about dead pixles.

i too have a stuck pixel in my screen .I also get very angry about it and have almost come to hate alienware over it. if it wouldnt be for every thing else working so well I would probably have sent it back and disputed my credit card payment so as not to loose the 15%. im so tempted to buy a screen from sagar and replace it. 1 pixel in the center is total BS i dont care what any one says.
I know this is a suggestion of questionable morality, but are there any methods to voluntarily create dead pixels without having the screen look like you punched it??

Yeah it sucks, its basically like buying a brand new Ferrari, and take it out the first time you get it and a rock fly up and give you a crack in the windsheild, Its right there in your FACE! And you cant do anything about it besides getting it replaced, But Alienware is being so gay about it right now, that it has to be in the center of the screen and then they'll replace it for free. I havent even had the damn thing for a month yet.

yeah. aw is damn shady about a lot of things. the dead pixel bullsh*t policy and the 30 day money back guarantee where they take 15% for a restocking fee. that 15% is the biggest bullsh*t. (that would be me losing $487 for my $3,187 purchase, which is absolutely absurd)
and what i'm hearing about people who are sending their computer back and forth to aw, only to have aw lag like hell on their repairs (sometimes not even fixing the problem) and sending it back to them after their 30 day money back guarantees are over. that's total bullsh*t. i'm on the verge of cancelling my order right now...

What do you have ordered right now? 7700? The machine is awsome as hell, its just that the alienware policies and there stupid ass restocking fee is BS. It runs like a dream. Just the dead pixel thing is getting to me and im thinking about just sending it back to the company. Today I heard from a guy at work that what causes a dead pixel could be the switching of the computer from a cold environment to a warm environment. In this case that is what happened to me, not knowing since this is my first laptop i have ever bought. I had my computer in my truck and its cold outside. When i brought it in to play on my lunch break, that could have been what happened.

yes, i do have a 7700 ordered, and from the reviews i've read from people (with operational 7700's), there's no doubt in my mind that the performance is awesome as hell. i'm just pretty irked by aw's policies, and i really fear having to deal with their on and off customer service, their dead pixel bullsh*t policy, and also that 15% restocking CRAP (fee). charging us for restocking?! they wouldn't need to restock if they would send a working computer.

and thanks for that note about the hot/cold temperature change. i'll keep that in mind.
