i6000d - Benchmarks

Well I finally received my i6000d today. What a great laptop this is!!

Cheers to Dell

Right out of the box I ran some benchmarks. I just downloaded these and ran them, I didn't modify anything.

3dmark2001 - 9500
3dmark2003 - 2584
3dmark2005 - 988
PCmark2004 - 3934

My specs are: 2.0P-M, 1GB Ram, 60g 7200k Hitachi, x300 128MB, and WUXGA.

I am very impressed by these numbers, this has the ability to play some of the 3D games and yet has very frugal battery life. This Pentium-M is an amazing chip, it blows the P-4 HT chip that I work with everyday out-of-the-water.

Let me know if anyone has any questions!

Try the Microsoft "ClearType Tuner PowerToy".

Does that improve the graphics ?

I just ordered an i6000D myself, those numbers make me feel pretty good about the purchase. Could you answer a couple additional questions for me possibly?

1. What other screen resolutions are supported? And when you lower the resolution does it center the image and leave blank space or does it automatically stretch the image?

2. When plugged in to an external monitor can the i6000D span the desktop across both displays or does it simply mirror the laptop display?

3. Anyone tried Halo or Sid M's Pirates on this model yet, I would love to see some results (anecdotal or benchmarks)?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Oh yea, how long between your order and delivery?

dlinkin, I have a question about that cleartype power toy myself. What exactly does it do, and what graphics does it improve?

bob c b, I am at work right now and don't have my i6000 with me but I can tell you there is a wide selection of resolutions, I remember the 16..x1050 was available. I will also say that the monitor is pretty damn sharp on non-native settings. Are there some particular resolutions that you want me to check for?

2. I haven't hooked it up to the external monitor yet, but it has the ATI control panel that allows you to select the resolution for the external monitor.

3. The only game I have tried is the Empire Earth II demo, it played that great. Although I don't believe that game lets me increase the resolution even though it says it changed. So I was only playing it at whatever the default is.

I ordered on the 22nd and it was delivered on the 7th. It did arrived at UPS on the 5th. My expected ship date was the 8th so I am happy with the turnaround time.

I'm specifically looking for HyrdaVision/Dual display capability? If I have an external display plugged in will the ATI drive support spanning the desktop across both displays or does it simply mirror what is on the laptop screen? Thanks for your answers.

bob, I will look into that this evening or tomorrow at the latest.

Average for the X300 is about a grand. Not too stunning at all but if that is all you need and you don't want to play too much of the 3d gaming out there or to come its ok.
If you do want to mention gaming though sent it back in protest and demand at least they come out with an X600 or better with DDR2 / 533Mhz!!! Seems that it is a waste of the display to not have the graphic muscle to drive it.
1st generation sonoma wide 15"ers price to performance have got to be better than this to meet the muster IMHO, especially for about $2,000 of hard earned money.

Looking above at the single X600 card it gets 1,176 3dmarks. I think if you want super 3d performance you are looking at an X700 at the bare minmum, and that kind of power creates heat/power issues. The x600 looks nice, but it appears to be a x300 without all the power saving features and a focus on maximizing the 3d performance from similar hardware.

You are right though some people will find the x300 wholely inadequate for their needs. If those people even need/want a laptop instead of a desktop, they are forced into the x800 or 6800. I feel, at least for my needs (fairly heavy), that both the x800 and 6800 create too many problems in heat and lack of battery life to even consider them at this point. I am sure the next generation of PCI cards from ATI will include a x400...(just making it up) that could easily get ~2500-3500 3dmarks in 3dmark05 with about the same power draw. Maybe us i6000d owners will consider an upgrade like that, if that day ever comes.

My lcd display improved. It seems brighter, and the text is bolder. It just makes the screen look better.
I agree... my guess is it more clearly alligns some settings that are slightly subjective or maybe slightly different on every screen. Either way it's a nice bit of free software!

dlinkin, not sure about the cleartype, I may not have configured it properly but I want to say it is a little less clear now.

I just ran Aquamark on this machine and came out with 19,550.

Set it like this. Look for the cleartype control in control panel.

In comparison with MR 9600 pro turbo in my I8600 :
3dmark2001 - 9992
3dmark2003 - 2831
3dmark2005 - 1067

My specs are: 1.6P-M, 1GB Ram, 60g 7200k Hitachi, 9600PT 128MB, and WSXGA+.

Only a bit slower than MR 9600PT. Not bad at all but also give no reason to change lappy from I8600 to I6000. I6000 only offers better look and build quality but no improvement in performance.

...but the i6000 has more future on upgradeability. They did'nt implement the PCI-e x16 for nothing.

..So you are saying that this Video card may be upgradeble in the future by the user? I mean by just simply removing the card like on your regular desktop? Thank you for your replies..

I tried ClearType and I find it hard to look at. Must be related to what kind of screen you have. I did notice that when I am on battery and I have the screen brightness way down to the lowest setting, it does help at that point.

JadeHawk, yes there is the possibility of an upgrade in the future. It all comes down to formfactor though, the card has to be roughly the same physical shape to fit in the space allowed for the current video card.

The 6000 is an upgrade to the 8600, but I would not upgrade to the 6000 if I already had the 8600. It is not that big of difference, the i6000 is more mobile friendly ie battery life and a few ounces lighter, whereas the 8600 has slightly better gpu performance.

I see now.. thank you for the reply. I am interested in the 6000 model simply cause I grew tired of the 12lbs I used to carry without adding the power supply and the bag. I am sure I will notice a huge performance decrease but will gain battery life and less strain in my shoulder with this model.. I placed an order for it should be here next week I hope. till then I will continue reading this forum.. as I did before I purchase the 12lbs dead Sager..

I removed the ram that came with my sager 8890. will I be able to use it in this model of Dell? TIA.

Seriously, who cares if dell even offers the x600 for the 6000? It only got 1255 in 3DMark05.. I just ran it on a system I have at the office. The nvidia cards being released are just way too strong. The m70 I have on order is averaging between 2300-3000 on 3dmark 05 (and it still has good battery utilization)..

Unless they ever release the x800 for the i6000, than (in my opinion) anyone with an 8600 looking to upgrade has only one choice, the M70. (which I just bought)
