SXGA+ and UXGA Screen for 5680

Ok. I know Ive asked this before, but I really didnt get a clear answer. Knowing that in the future, with demanding games such as Halo 2 and Doom 3 coming out, would the SXGA+ or UXGA screen be better? I have heard arguements both ways, for and against both screens. I plan on using this laptop for gaming, (of course), as well as DVD movie watching, etc. I know that games like Doom 3 and HL2 will never be able to run at 1600 x 1200 on this laptop, without serious performance losses. Also, which screen will offer the better quality when changed to a lower resolution(1280x1024)? I know that lcds are best at their native resolution, but when playing games, which is better? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

replie

I would say that you should definitely go with the uxga screen because you can always lower the resolution, and I own one myself, and everything that people are saying about the uxga screens being too beutiful to pass up really is true, especcailly for dvds

yea i mean lets say my computer will always be at 1280X1024....for gaming and desktop and photoshop and everything. Would it be better to have the sxga+

do both the sxga+ and UXGA have same response time/brightness/contrast ratio/dot pitch? If they do it makes sense to go with the sxga+ for me but everyone is sayin gthe uxga just "looks" better? Basically, if you put both the sxga+ and UXGA at 1280X1024 resolution, which will look better? ANd how much better will it \look

The UXGA has a wider viewing angle. If ONLY you are gonna be using the laptop then get the SXGA+ but if you plan to show off with friends or watch a video with the family or make a presentation with dudes sitting in a semi circle (almost) then the UXGA is the one to get...
it is sharper, clearer, crisper and you wont be moving the screen around to get the best image like you will be with the sxga+

I still haven't found any clear answers on this either.

I wish someone would just say "This ones better".

Or someone say "They are both perfect, one is just easier to see from sides"

Something...

Very confusing.

Thats it!! With the UXGA you have to deal with the res bring at 1600x1200 which many people are not use to having (tiny text and all) on the other hand the screen "clarity" and viewing is much better. Now with the SXGA+ you get a more standard res. but not that great of a screen in relation to viewing angles.

16x12 is easy to view

i sit over 3 feet away and its clear as day if your blind you shouldnt have a comp anyways

I think what Trojan and JoshBowers want to know is which one will look better in 1280x1024 or 1024x768... the uxga or the sxga+...
for what it's worth here's my reason for uxga...

at 1400x1050

1400 / 1280 = 1.09375
1050 / 1024 = 1.02539
Difference of 0.06836

1400 / 1024 = 1.36719
1400 / 768 = 1.82292
Difference of 0.45573

at 1600x1200

1600 / 1280 = 1.25
1200 / 1024 = 1.17188
Difference of 0.07812

1600 / 1024 = 1.5625
1200 / 768 = 1.5625
Perfect 1:1

the aspect ratios for the uxga has a difference of 0 to .07 where as the sxga+ is .06 to OMG .4!!! I get a perfect 1 to 1 ratio on the uxga if i play at 1024x768 and only a .07 diff on 1280x1024....

Please le me know if this is correct or am i just smoking crack again... I really got to stop that.

Is either one better for photoshop/cad work?
Now, since i didnt have the extra $, i got the SXGA. Now, it seems like everybody thinks its crap?? Is this true guys?! am i gonna really regret the SXGA versus the UXGA?? Mind you, i love gaming, and that is part of the reason i got my laptop... oy...

Should i try and see if i can upgrade my order?
UXGA is hands down better for cad and Adobe Photoshop, you can not argue against this... with UXGA you get more room to move around / work
post #13 of 48
Well.. tommorow im gonna call my comp, and get them to upgrade my order to UXGA. phatthai's argument for it convinced me.

From all I've read UXGA is definately a better option over SXGA+, while at the same time certainly SXGA+ shouldn't really dissapoint.

Now I haven't been to a computer store to actually visually compare laptop screens at different resolutions, but I have experimented with resolutions on my 17inch CRT at home, and the only conclusion I can come to about 1600x1200 is that it is too small for my poor tired eyes. If only Windows had scalable fonts... But alas, I think I'm forced to use either SXGA+ or SXGA, for the sake of being able to read (besides, it's easier on the budget... except in the case of upgrading to the 8900 to get the SXGA screen, which would be dumb). After all, I primarily use my computer for reading (and typing), though I do play DVD's and games every now and then. Does anyone know whether HL2 will support 1400x1050? Do most people who use UXGA read text at that resolution, or is there a non-fuzzy solution?

The thing people dont understand is.... that LCDs ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN CRTs!!!!!!

lol, with that said. I will now say that with lcds, you have something called a native resolution. Now, with CRTs, you can change ur resolution without much grief. With lcds, if u change the resolution, you sacrifice quality. It creates little spaces in between the pixels, or something like that. Anyway, it makes the display look bad, and so many do not prefer it. However, with AA or anti aliasing, the spaces in the pixels are blended, or something. Im not quite too sure exactly, but its something like that.

Res, res, res

Personally, I think that I would prefer the 1600 x 1200. When using a 15'' laptop, its not like you have infinate space to drag windows. The space that the high res simulates a larger desktop ( I know its really not different from a CRT).

But, I would use that only if I were not at my house. High res is great for when you are not staring at the screen to 6 hrs a day. Good for an airplane ride.

But I spend too much time at my computer, and I prefer a larger size everything, not just text. Buy a cheap CRT for home and run around with the 1600 x 1200. That is my solution.

well i remember what my dad's laptop looked like at SXGA+, and that was stretching it (in terms of how easily I could read text). remember i'm going to be reading and typing on this laptop for at least 5 hours a day, every day, maybe longer, until maybe 5 years from now or whenever the thing dies and i can upgrade to an OLED display (my eyes are sensitive to the fluorescent lighting used in LCD's, and my brain is sensitive to the radiation used in CRT's. I'm a delicate little flower). anyways, no one answered my questions.

whats all the fussin and the fightin

I dont know why a lot of you are having a problem with this. my suggestion, if you really are that concerned, go to the store and look at a UXGA screen. the 705s has one. play with the settings, scale it to 1024 and back. its really not that bad! yes the lines are a bit blured but it is still VERY readable. games will be no problem. all in all i HIGHLY recommend spending the extra 95$ for the UXGA. they are ultra clear and you can see it from incredible angles. but dont take my word for it. go to the store. look. feel. play.

I can't use anything under 16x12 really anymore... it's all about space to move your windows around. most browser has a font zoom function and i can always turn up windows' font a few points... and for $95 more on a $2000+ item... i can skim on stuff that i can replace myself later but the screen will be a bit*h to upgrade down the line.
