9300, 2 hard drives? - Page 12

Gold Beater and hifking- will this work in the laptop? I hope it does, hehe.

Has anyone contacted Dell to ask about this?

Ohhh- I didn't realize that's what you were asking...That's what this whole thread is all about. I'm saying that I've discovered on Ebay a Dell amnufactered CD-ROM hard drive sled that supposedly will work with my 9200, and that I'm assuming that it will also work with the 9300.

If you are not talking about using the CD-ROM modular HDD sled, then what do you mean?

Snafle I'm not the one to ask. I'm just a noob that was attracted to this idea, having come from my old Gateway Solo series notebooks that have modular bay accessories like 2nd batteries or 2nd hard drives.

I've been thinking... an activity that usually leads to spending money.

I have one of the adapters listed early on in this thread. I haven't tested to see if it will fit yet, but what do you think of this:

The adapter + a 44-pin dual-IDE ribon cable + another 2.5" hard drive sitting right on top of the one already in the adapter.

If

A: there's enough clearance for two drives to sit on top of eachother and still slide into the chassis, and

B: The BIOS will detect both drives on the secondary channel (don't forget to jumper them properly)

Then you'd have 3 internal drives.

Daddy wants.

And if the adapter won't slid into the chasis with the drives stacked like that, I'd just take the palm rest off of the system, slid the adapter in with one drive on it and then set the second one on top of it that way. I'm almost certain this will fit one way or the other. So it comes down to the BIOS detecting the second drive on the secondary IDE channel.

I have a 3rd drive, I just don't have the cable. They are available though.

Not a bit. Notebook drives don't get very hot. Tiny little motors.

If you, Daddy, or anyone else is able to put two hard drives on one ide channel using that 44 pin 2 drive ide cable let me know. I tried it on my 600m and it wouldn't recognize either drive, even if only one was on there. I tried every combination, jumpers as well to no avail.

Well that's not encouraging news. But I still want to try it since the only part I don't have is the cable. (The cheapest part) If I can find one localy, I'll give it a shot.

Does the BIOS in the 600M report a primay and secondary space on the IDE channel? I realize that if it does, it doesn't mean it will let you use it, but I'm curious. The XPS shows a secondary space for both IDE channels.

My only guess at this point is either a faulty cable or a length restriction (the size of the cable is a little longer than what the chipset specification says) I might try it again with only a one drive cable.

I bought this one:

You can also get the longer version:

If you live in the brooklyn area you can pick it up locally from the store. The guy I called from that online store was very helpful.

It has one field for reporting space of the hd on the primary ide and one field for the space of the hd on the secondary ide.

Unfortunately I'm not even in North America, so I'll have to hunt around localy for a cable.

It sounds like your BIOS may not support 2 drives on an IDE channel. I don't know if mine does, but it does show a secondary slot "available" on each channel.

I just popped out my adapter tray and there's no way a second drive will fit in there and slide back in. So I'll have to see if I can find room for the drive inside the chasis somewhere. I'll open it up and poke around a little later and check it out.

Update: HD Bay Received

Hello Everybody,

Just wanted to give you guys an update.
I received the 2nd HD bay from "qj.xu" (thank you qj.xu) today. I would have had it yesterday but no one was here to receive the package.
I'll be putting the second drive in tonite.

qj.xu sent the package out from China on Saturday and it reached my house on Wednesday, very quick delivery considering that Monday was a national holiday!

I'll give you guys another update once I have installed my drive.

Thanks again qj.xu!

Update: HD Bay Installed

Hello Everybody,

Well all I have to say is that having an extra 100gb kicks ass!!!!

I didnt take any photos of the install (sry i was in too much of a hurry to install the drive and my new atheros a/b/g wireless card).
All i did was follow the pics on http://www.a0.com.cn/damageshowx.asp?id=646

Once I had the drive bay installed in my XPS2, I booted up my system, used Partition Magic to partion and format the drive and BAM! there it was:
Drive letter D!!!

The whole process took about 15 mins and was an extremely easy/painless install.

Just one note: I have my Second Drive set to Cable Select, not sure how everyone else has it set.

If anyone needs more info feel free to ask and do not hesitate to order the parts from qj.xu!

Yeah, How do I order this from qj.xu?
Is there a paypal account?
