9300, 2 hard drives? - Page 16

good point...I guess I never thought of that...

What do you mean by a hardware search?

How do you stop the second hard drive to remove it?

I understand you can "Scan for new hardware" in the device manager, but how does that help for taking the drive out?

I know you can definetly stop the dvd rom via the "Remove hardware applet" but not sure about the hard drive.

Any info will be greatly appreciated!!!

When the drive bay is in it seems to want to fall out easily, like it wasnt making a connection. I have not tested it as far as booting up the computer yet. I was worried about a partial connection and didnt want to fry anything.

Is there something that is supposed to hold the bay in the laptop? The screw that holds the optical drive doesnt seem to do anything when I put the screw back in.

ANy help will be greatly appreciated!!!

I just used duck(duct) tape to hold them flush up into the underneath of the palm rest, works great

The device is excellent and its sits flush with the case, so looks good too (no one can see the tape!)

thanks a lot!!

worth repeating that these items are very cheap and this guy is compelely reliable, and trustworthy

Don't you need to set the drives up as "removable" to do this without getting nailed with delayed write failures? Have you tested this with a drive that actually has data on it that you access frequently? Doing it with empty drives as a test isn't the same thing.

BTW, if you don't plan on taking the drive out, put your swap file on it for better performance. (Get rid of the one on the C drive.)

Great advices.

I usually partition my one and only HDD into 3 partitions:
- one is for OS and Program files (about 10-15GB);

- second is dedicated to swap drive ( about 3 times installed RAM);

- third is for data and Acronis backups.

So, pioneers, how is this second HDD working out for you?

When those 600GB hit the market, it will be a lot of fun having 1.2 Terabytes in your laptop!

Well i've tried to dig through this thread for a final answer on what the solution is to add a second drive to an XPS Gen 2 or a 9300. I see many possibles but nothing that I consider confirmed details.

Could someone kindly post me details for one that will fit an XPS Gen 2 for sure and will require no mods to the Laptop. A link where to buy would be cool

Many thanks... monster thread

That's the one I have. Some of the others I've seen in this thread look cooler, but this one works perfectly so I'm happy with it. (Not that the others wouldn't work as well)

You can use a IBM T41/T42/R50 2nd hard drive adapter (slim type) as an alternate solution, but it is more expensive. And you will meet the same problem with the hanging clip

EDIT: for the hotswap, i must remove the 2nd hdd in DevMan, then pull out. Otherwise a "delay write failed" will appear. We need a IDE driver to force flush all pending data to hdd before removal. Anyone know which driver could be used ?

Try disabling delayed write cache for that drive as per Microsoft's directions:

Quote:
Note If you turn off the "Enable write caching on the disk" feature, your disk performance may decrease. Because of this, you may want to monitor system performance after you complete the following procedure.

a. In Windows Explorer, right-click your hard-disk, and then click Properties.

b. Click the Hardware tab.

c. Click the hard disk, and then click Properties.

d. Click the Policies tab.

e. Click to clear the Enable write caching on the disk check box, and then click OK two times.
I'm not certain, but you might have to do it for both of the drives you're swapping between.

Another way might be to set the drive up as removeable, after which it should show up in the "Safely Remove Hardware" app in the systray. If you eject it that way, you'd be fine.

The easy, and correct way to fix the "Metal Tab Problem"

I suspect you're talking about the metal clips that stick down from the top, inner edge of the CD bay.

This is easy to fix. Follow Dell's instructions for removing the palm rest from the computer and remove the clips via these two screws:

Then put the screws back in without the clips so you don't lose them, and either put the clips in a safe place, or better yet, tape them securely to the inside of the chasis so you can't possibly lose them.

I think this is a much better method than others I've seen here, including the "Jam them up there with a screwdriver until they aren't in the way anymore" approach.

Used it for some weeks now, and I haven`t got any write delayed errors yet. To put the pagefile on that disc will not work for me cause sometimes i need the DVD drive.
I went into the device manager and changed the policy to disable "Write Caching" and it didnt give me an option to Safely remove hardware.

I know when the DVD rom is in the bay it shows the Safely Remove Hardware applet in the system tray.

But not with the second hard drive in the bay.

Has anyone been able to make this work?

Can anyone confirm that this works with the 9300?

It looks alot more sturdy than what I got from China.

I found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-Thinkpad-T40...QQcmdZViewItem and its only a few more dollars than I spent on the one from china.

Is there an easier way to get the drive out, other than prying it out with a screwdriver or something similair?

I dont want to screw up my case.

Thanks in advance!
