Excellent. But what do you mean it "looks like" the kit? Aren't the vendors sure about what it is? Mind telling us the price?

I ordered online. The pic looked the same.

It was just under 50 shipped. The one that had it in stock charged 12 bucks for shipping though.

It may be here as early as Friday. Though this time of year who knows.

Well that went bust. Apparently they are "indefinetly back ordered". I will keep looking and see if someolace actually has them in stock.

Well unless there is more then one versiosn of the T21 T42 T50 IBM 2nd hard drive adapter then it won't work with the 9300. I just got one I ordered off of ebay, and while it is the right size and the connector is in the right spot, it isn't the correct connector. It's a male on the adapter, we need a female connector like what is on the CD/DVD drive.

For reference, the part numbers on the drive casing are:
FPU P/N 62P4553
ASM P/N 62P4552

So no one has had made a caddy specifically for the XPS notebook yet? That is strange. Has anyone called Dell regarding this? I am sure everyone is with me when I say, "We need this for our notebook".

What suprises me is that you can't seem to get a generic caddy in the states. These laptops use the standard slim DVD/CD drives so you would think someone would be selling the same for a second harddrive. So far China seems to be the only source.

IBM makes 3 types: Ultraslim Bay, Ultrabay 2000 and Ultrabay Slim. What is yours ?

Image link (middle of that page)

EDIT: when i bought mine, they listed it as "IBM Thinkpad T40 ultrabay slim 2nd hdd". But that drive is a chinese clone, no label, just a bare plastic box. I thought an original T40 box might work. Sorry man.

Lenovo link for T43 2nd caddy.

turning off 2nd drive

Just to re-iterate, I couldn't get the software noted in this thread to "hot swap" the 2nd internal drive to work properly

(the drive is not able to be toggled off with add/remove devices as on the C and D latitude lines)

Someone (forget whom) posted workaround, simply go to your:

control panel>system>hardware>device manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

and disable the Secondary IDE channel

...I had to relearn this when running on battery recently, the 7800 sure eats battery time, used to be able to leave the 2nd drive on without worrying about the power draw.

cheers.

I've sent a few PMs to qj.xu and just sent an email. Has anyone ordered one reciently or perhaps have a spare tray they'd like to part with?
I had a couple questions that probably don't warrant a whole new thread.

- Is an external USB drive fast enough to dual-boot an OS (Linux) off of it?

- Is the external drive fast enough to store and run VMWare images off of it?

I was thinking about upgrading the 60gb drive that came with my 9300, and then putting the 60gb drive in a USB enclosure.

Thanks.

Damnit I've sent a few emails and PMs attempting to reach qj.xu but have not received any reply back. If anyone has found another source, can reach qj.xu or possibly has one they aren't using PLEASE let me know!

I would also like to find a hard drive caddy for my XPS. Anyone know of any others that may work?

i agree
WOW... Still no way to get that 2nd HDD adapter for the 9300? I keep watching this thread. You would think DELL would have jumped on this by now?
Who makes business trips to China and wants to fill a suitcase and make a few bucks?
Still no luck in contacting the guy who previously shipped them over to the few lucky devils who jumped on this. I've contacted the company in China also without hearing anything back.

LOL...that's absolutely ridiculous...those things are incredibly useful, considering the most you can get otherwise in terms of space is 120GB for a single drive...I ordered two from the guy who was originally selling them from China, and I'm not using the second one...unfortunately, I just moved all my worldly possessions to another location and don't know where it is right now...furthermore, I might need it down the road, so even if I was able to find it, I'd have to ask a whole shitload of cash for it given the short supply... (capitalism and all being what it is, of course...)...I only check PM's once every so often, so don't get pissed if I don't reply immediately...also incredibly busy...

I would be willing to trade for something I find valuable, considering it literally is only a tiny bit of plastic and a couple of small circuit boards...don't really need anything specific, though, so can't give you any guidelines...also, I already have a wife, so don't offer strange sex favors or a kilo of some illegal substance....

If you want to offer a straight buy, I'll make it available to this forum first since you all are great folks...don't think we're allowed to sell things in this actual forum, though, so any suggestions? If I put it up on ebay, the whole world will be able to bid on it, and I definitely want you guys to have first crack...I COULD post it in the 'For Sale/Wanted' board (that's what it's there for, I guess), but again, the Dell frequent flyers should have first dibs...

PS. Anyone sending me an offer of $300 will win instantly, and I'll even throw in a 20GB Fujitsu 4200RPM crapola HD! LOL, first PM wins! (Yeah, right, like I think anyone will bite on THAT price)...anywho, someone suggest a lottery system or something, or send me an offer and i'll go dig up the part...just trying to give back to the group a bit and make some much-needed cash at the same time...

Guys,

The cost of the adapter was (wait for it) $6.50 US

(from order email, below)
a. The price of the goods : second hard drive box 6.5*1 =6.5

b. charge of the transport : 30 (from china to u.s use EMS, 3-5 days)

c. charge of the remittance by paypal: 9.95

total cost: 6.5+30+9.95=46. 45 u.s $

Our friends name is: qj.xu BUT he obviously does not want to keep doing this as he is not replying to PMs

But the store he got then from was:

http://www.a0.com.cn/order.asp?

All you need is a command of the chinnese language (lots of forum members have that language)

Maybe someone can take this up and get a link going again

I would get another one just to have as backup. I use mine very day, have OSX86 10.4.5 running on it

Alternatively given that the slim DVD burner that fits our laptops fits many laptops, surely another manufacturer out there has an adapter. I had hopes for the IBM ultraslim thingy, but then got one of these from china.

*EDIT I just glanced back through the thread and noticed that qj.xu posted that the adpater could work in the IBM: "ibm also have Ultrabay2000 (t20-t30)"
Anyone snag one from IBM and try?
**EDIT again $49US from lenovo, option when configuring T43

Anyone looking at ebaying them (balthazar? (spelling?), the potential market is literally huge
