9300, 2 hard drives? - Page 20

The IBM UltraSlim Module Adapter Bay Hard Drive Caddy is only 40$ (50$ tops) on eBay. So with shipping you're talking about 45-60$. And it will have a cleaner finish and has depth in the inner wall to allow tappings the screw to mount the optical drive bracket so you can screw it into the laptop from the bottom.

Once I actually have a need for a 2nd hard drive in mine that is the way I'll go. For now... the 60gig 7200rpm does me just fine. This machine is not used as my only machine and required to store a ton of stuff, I have a Media Server for that. =)

(from order email, below)
a. The price of the goods : second hard drive box 6.5*1 =6.5

b. charge of the transport : 30 (from china to u.s use EMS, 3-5 days)

c. charge of the remittance by paypal: 9.95

total cost: 6.5+30+9.95=46. 45 u.s $

Our friends name is: qj.xu BUT he obviously does not want to keep doing this as he is not replying to PMs

But the store he got then from was:

http://www.a0.com.cn/order.asp?

All you need is a command of the chinnese language (lots of forum members have that language)

Maybe someone can take this up and get a link going again

I would get another one just to have as backup. I use mine very day, have OSX86 10.4.5 running on it

Alternatively given that the slim DVD burner that fits our laptops fits many laptops, surely another manufacturer out there has an adapter. I had hopes for the IBM ultraslim thingy, but then got one of these from china.

*EDIT I just glanced back through the thread and noticed that qj.xu posted that the adpater could work in the IBM: "ibm also have Ultrabay2000 (t20-t30)"
Anyone snag one from IBM and try?
**EDIT again $49US from lenovo, option when configuring T43

Anyone looking at ebaying them (balthazar? (spelling?), the potential market is literally huge

Yes the guy originally doing this has stopped responding to emails and PMs as I've attempted to contact him a few times. I have also sent the online store a total of 7 emails 4 of while were in english and the other 3 in chinese (had a friend do this for me). The emails stated that I'd like to purchase 24 of these units! Yes I'd shell out and pay that, save on shipping and resell them for an honest amount to those others who are looking for this.

However the store has not replied to ANY request I've sent them. Also note that their site (dont ask me where as it was months ago) stated that they would not ship outside China. This could be the reason they do not reply to my emails.

While the IBM UltraSlim caddy does fit the 9300 I've looked at the circuit board and it does NOT match the layout of whats needed for the 9300. If you know something different or have one thats has worked let me know.

So it's "possible" to be able to remove the DVD ROM from the I9300 and put in a second harddrive?

How easy is it to take that DVD ROM drive out? I thought it was screwed in place.

Hmm, this has me curious now. I want a second harddrive in my I9300 that I can swap. That would be so awesome.

Skills, no you cant open the optical drive caddy and put a hard drive in it as this was 1 of the 1st things people looked at. If it was this easy no one would have ordered one from China. Removing the optical drive is simple, simply remove the 1 screw on the bottom holding it in and them using a small screwdriver push it out from where you removed the screw. Se photo or the 9300 Servie Manual link in my sig:

If all else fails... a dead or used Dell Optical drive could be gutted to make way for a hard drive. Then just have to order a JAE plug to connect to the HD and wire that plug to the inside of the Optical drives plug that connects to the rest of the system.

There are solutions... just takes time and patience to put it together.

Where would you get something like that from?

I looked all over the place and i found connectors for a slim-line drive to be hooked up to a desktop ide connector, but nothing in other direction.

Another solution :|

There is a shop that has around 2 or 3 caddies, just bare caddy, no screw. And they are expensive, 35USD right here in Saigon, VN, shipping cost about $30 more . If anyone wants it at any cost, contact me.
If anyony has friends traveling in VN, ask them to buy it for you, i'll give you the address of that shop later (forgot ).

So what's the best caddy to get that will tear apart easily? I want to modify one to use a full-size drive in an Intel Mini. Cheers and excellent detective work in this thread!

I just upgraded from a 9300 to an E1705-9400. My hard drive caddy adapter works like a charm in this system.

Hey larry do you have a pic of the screws used? I just got an adapter and the 4 hard drive screws fit and hold it in fine however NONE of the other 15 included screws fit anywhere! err sorry.. there is are 2 (of 5) very small, maybe 2mm self tapping screws that hold the front bezel on. None of the screws will fit through to hold the top on. Other than that it works fine. Not happy with the price I paid but it works and I needed the ability to hold a 2nd drive. Now to order the Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160Gig drive!

I never had any luck with those darn screws. I got the drive secured with a couple of them. I only have one screw holding the adapter board, and it does not fit correctly. I had to remove the bezel originally. I could not get it to fit my 9300 correctly.
