Greg - I'm happy to say that the buzzing is gone! I even put my ear up to the LCD in a quiet room and listened at every brightness setting and I couldn't hear sound! I'm still worried that the latches might break yet again which is too bad because the FS550 feels like a very solid notebook.

One of my latches, just broke. I can't decide if I want to call and send it back or not.
Did they pay for your shipping?

Sony actually offers on-site service if it's only the latch that needs to be replaced. I had to send mine in because my LCD was buzzing in addition to the latch breaking. Sony mailed me a box (which I had to assemble), and they pay for shipping both ways. good luck.

I just called to have a box sent too, to get the latch and screen humming fixed. I'm probably going to end up keeping this laptop for now, at least until new processors come out.

When are the new processors coming out? Any news of a better graphics card do you know?

Thanks.

Well the dual-core processors (Yonah) are supposed to come out at the end of the year, but I wouldn't count on them coming out until the first quarter or first half or 2006.

I don't think we're going to see a better graphics card in the FS. I'm actually quite happy with what the 6200 can do now that I've played with it a little. I don't plan on keeping this long though, so in the long run I'll probably end up getting a 6800 or Quadro1400-based notebook once everything has settled down and there are some solid designs out.

Update: Nearly 6 months experience with my FS 550

I'm still quite pleased with my purchase of the Sony... but what makes it nice is an extended life battery... and battery life really was the problem with this laptop from the get-go. I get, on average, 2.5 hours with the OEM battery and 3.5-3.75 hrs with the extended life battery. Six hours split between 2 batteries is okay by me.

I like the ergonomics of the 550 (the keyboard is probably one of the best I've ever experienced on a laptop)... the HDD is quiet, it plays the games I like very nicely, stays cool and has a quality LCD screen I am delighted with every time I use it... and so are the large number of people that routinely comment on the quality of the LCD panel - "so sharp and clear" is the comment most often heard. <I still think the Fujitsu N6010 has the best LCD panel I've ever seen, but the Sony runs a very close second>.

So... is this laptop "perfect"?

Nah... of course not... no laptop is perfect because end users needs differ.

However, this laptop has, for nearly six months of hard use (and a few drops but with no broken latches), worked better for me, and with FAR LESS PROBLEMS than the Gateway, Compaq and Dell laptops it has replaced.

That's my take on the FS 550... terrific machine, but ya need an extended life battery to get to that 6+ hour wireless life we all strive for.

Now... all that said... if I could have the Fujitsu N6010 weigh in at 6.1 pounds instead of its over 10 pound heft, I'd be ordering one right now... but I'd be ordering a spare entended life battery as well.

hmm so is the screen buzzing repairable by sony? is this a legitimate complaint to be repaired or is that just the way it is.

Mine is insignificant.

yes, Sony successfully repaired the issue by replacing several components on my FS series. this was about a year ago so I'm assuming that the new models no longer suffer from this problem.

i have a 745 and the screen has a slight buzz, it is insignificant but still there, only in a dead silent room can i hear it or putting my ear up to it
